This is the first monograph dedicated to the systematic exposition of the whole variety of topics related to quantum cohomology. The subject first originated in theoretical physics (quantum string theory) and has continued to develop extensively over the last decade. The author's approach to quantum cohomology is based on the notion of the Frobenius manifold. The first part of the book is devoted to this notion and its extensive interconnections with algebraic formalism of operads, differential equations, perturbations, and geometry. In the second part of the book, the author describes the construction of quantum cohomology and reviews the algebraic geometry mechanisms involved in this const...
The appearance of mapping class groups in mathematics is ubiquitous. The book presents 23 papers containing problems about mapping class groups, the moduli space of Riemann surfaces, Teichmuller geometry, and related areas. Each paper focusses completely on open problems and directions. The problems range in scope from specific computations, to broad programs. The goal is to have a rich source of problems which have been formulated explicitly and accessibly. The book is divided into four parts. Part I contains problems on the combinatorial and (co)homological group-theoretic aspects of mapping class groups, and the way in which these relate to problems in geometry and topology. Part II conce...
This multi-volume set deals with Teichmuller theory in the broadest sense, namely, as the study of moduli space of geometric structures on surfaces, with methods inspired or adapted from those of classical Teichmuller theory. The aim is to give a complete panorama of this generalized Teichmuller theory and of its applications in various fields of mathematics. The volumes consist of chapters, each of which is dedicated to a specific topic. The volume has 19 chapters and is divided into four parts: The metric and the analytic theory (uniformization, Weil-Petersson geometry, holomorphic families of Riemann surfaces, infinite-dimensional Teichmuller spaces, cohomology of moduli space, and the in...
The study of mapping class groups and moduli spaces of compact Riemann surfaces is currently a central topic in topology, algebraic geometry, and conformal field theory. This book contains proceedings from two workshops held in the summer of 1991, one at the University of G\"ottingen and the other at the University of Washington at Seattle. The papers gathered here represent diverse approaches and contain several important new results. With both research and survey articles, the book appeals to mathematicians and physicists.
This book consists of a collection of articles dedicated to Valentin Poénaru, on topology and geometry in a broad sense. Poénaru is one of the leading mathematicians whose work had an essential impact on the development of topology in France over the last forty years of the twentieth century. The special topics addressed in this volume include hyperbolic geometry, 3-manifolds, complex and symplectic geometry, differential topology, combinatorial group theory, piecewise-linear topology, algebraic geometry, knots and links, homotopy theory, braid groups, phylogenetics, the history of geometry, and the philosophy of mathematics. This collection of articles, written by well-known researchers, provides a lively insight into a number of current research topics in geometry and topology.
Geometric Topology is a foundational component of modern mathematics, involving the study of spacial properties and invariants of familiar objects such as manifolds and complexes. This volume, which is intended both as an introduction to the subject and as a wide ranging resouce for those already grounded in it, consists of 21 expository surveys written by leading experts and covering active areas of current research. They provide the reader with an up-to-date overview of this flourishing branch of mathematics.
Heinrich Bartsch was born 4 October 1849 in Elizabetthal, Ukraine, South Russia. His parents were Absalom Bartsch and Maria Konrath. He married Barbara Janzen in 1875. They emigrated in 1875 and settled at Bingham Lake, Minnesota. They had eleven children. They moved to Dalmeny, Saskatchewan in 1903. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia.
