Pentecost of the Hills in Taiwan
The people movement to Christ among the original inhabitants (formerly called the mountain tribes) of Taiwan has been called a Twentieth Century Miracle. From 1929 to 1960 about 50% of the eleven different groups of MalayoPolynesian peoples became Protestant Christians Pentecost of the Hills utilizes history, politics, sociology, anthropology and missiology to tell their story for the first time. This is not a missionary accountit relates how God raised up local leaders to do the major work of evangelism and nurture.
Christian Mission in Seventeenth-Century Taiwan
This is the first book-length study of the reception of Christianity and the epistemic outcomes of contact between Protestant and Catholic missionaries and Indigenous Austronesians in the contact zone of seventeenth-century colonial Taiwan. In the Age of European Expansion, Dutch Reformed and Spanish Catholic missionaries attempted to win the souls of Indigenous Austronesian people in Taiwan. Christopher Joby examines the strategies that the missionaries employed to overcome the gap between their own cultures and languages and those of the Indigenous Austronesians or Formosans in the contact zone of seventeenth-century Taiwan, and evaluates the success of these strategies. As such, this book is a reception history of the texts, beliefs, and practices that Reformed Protestant and Catholic missionaries introduced to convert the Formosans to their mode of Christianity. Using many linguistic and non-linguistic examples, this approach allows for a ‘complementary colour perspective’ by comparing the epistemic outcomes of the Dutch Reformed and Spanish Catholic missions.

The Colonial 'Civilizing Process' in Dutch Formosa, 1624-1662
This book studies the dynamic encounter between Taiwan’s Indigenous Peoples (the Formosans), the Dutch VOC and Chinese settlers between 1624 and 1662. From the viewpoint of indigenous agency, the author offers a comprehensive picture of the Taiwanese colonial 'civilizing process' under Dutch rule. Using so far unexplored source materials from the VOC archives, the author shows how Taiwan’s Indigenous Peoples shaped their own colonial reality while retreating from 'the Age of Aboriginal Taiwan'.
