Discourse Theory and Practice is much more than a collection of key classic articles and papers in the field of discourse analysis. A Realist Account of Stress, PTSD, and Resilience
This book rejects traditional, dominant—typically reductive and anti-realist—explanations of stress, PTSD, and resilience. Frank Tortorello presents the United States Marine Corps’ doctrinal explanation of stress, PTSD, and resilience as a case in point using new realist theoretical resources from Rom Harré and Charles R. Varela. The author systematically exposes the scientific and ethical failures of traditional explanations in accounting for the actions of stressed and resilient Marines on and off the battlefield. The power of new realist explanations emerges in application to the same ethnographic data, thereby supporting the author’s call to replace traditional explanations with those grounded in new realism.
Valentinian Ethics and Paraenetic Discourse
Offering a fresh assessment of the presence and function of paraenesis within Valentinianism, this book places Valentinian moral exhortation within the context of early Christian moral discourse. Like other early Christians, Valentinians were not only interested in ethics, but used moral exhortation to discursively shape social identity. Building on the increasing recognition of ethical and communal concerns reflected in the Nag Hammadi sources, this book advances the discussion by elucidating the social rhetoric within, especially, the Gospel of Truth and the Interpretation of Knowledge. The social function of paraenesis is to persuade an audience through social re-presentation. The authors of these texts discursively position their readers, and themselves, within engaging moments of narrativity. It is hoped that this study will encourage greater integration of research between those working on the Nag Hammadi material and those studying early Christian paraenetic discourse.
Religion in the Public Schools
Since September 11, 2001, the profile of religion's role in our global society has increased significantly. Religion has long been a force in people's lives as numerous studies and polls show, yet we continue to struggle with understanding differing religious traditions and what they mean for our common life. There are few places where Americans can meet together to learn about each other and to share in the common construction of our futures. One such place for many is public education. The purpose of this book is to illustrate the complexity of the social, cultural, and legal milieu of schooling in the United States in which the improvement of religious literacy and understanding must take place. Public education is the new commons. We must negotiate this commons in two meanings of that term: first, we must come to mutual understandings and agreement about how to proceed toward a common horizon of a religiously plural America; second, we must work our way through the obstacles in these settings in practical ways to achieve results that work.
