The Semitic Languages presents a comprehensive survey of the individual languages and language clusters within this language family, from their origins in antiquity to their present-day forms. This second edition has been fully revised, with new chapters and a wealth of additional material. New features include the following: • new introductory chapters on Proto-Semitic grammar and Semitic linguistic typology • an additional chapter on the place of Semitic as a subgroup of Afro-Asiatic, and several chapters on modern forms of Arabic, Aramaic and Ethiopian Semitic • text samples of each individual language, transcribed into the International Phonetic Alphabet, with standard linguistic word-by-word glossing as well as translation • new maps and tables present information visually for easy reference. This unique resource is the ideal reference for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students of linguistics and language. It will be of interest to researchers and anyone with an interest in historical linguistics, linguistic typology, linguistic anthropology and language development.

The Semitic Languages

The handbook The Semitic Languages offers a comprehensive reference tool for Semitic Linguistics in its broad sense. It is not restricted to comparative Grammar, although it covers also comparative aspects, including classification. By comprising a chapter on typology and sections with sociolinguistic focus and language contact, the conception of the book aims at a rather complete, unbiased description of the state of the art in Semitics. Articles on individual languages and dialects give basic facts as location, numbers of speakers, scripts, numbers of extant texts and their nature, attestation where appropriate, and salient features of the grammar and lexicon of the respective variety. The handbook is the most comprehensive treatment of the Semitic language family since many decades.

TW Index is a complete and detailed index of everything that has appeared in the SDC Turning Wheels magazine since its inception in 1972. Of greatest importance are the advice items that are indexed by subject (engines, brakes, steering, etc.), model AND year including all individual letters that appear in the Co-Operator column. Historical items are also indexed by subject as well as by the vehicle (model and year) they relate to. If you own, for instance, a 1959 Hawk, TW Index will give you instant access to everything that has been published about your car and much more. Each listing, of course, refers you to the specific issue of "Turning Wheels" and cites the page on which the item begins. Rated "excellent" by Fred Fox and Bob Palma. Volume 1 of Turning Wheels Index includes issues of Turning Wheels from 1972 through 1992 with 10,711 references on 159 pages. Volume 2 includes 1993 through 2009 with 9,995 references on 158 pages.

The present essays try to know how the culturally different peoples of Ethiopia remember their past, and what conceptions they entertain of each other; explore the dangers inherent in situations of cultural contact and examine how the powerful notions of pride, honor, name, and self-esteem come into play, as people struggle to maintain their identity, individually or as a group. The master trope for this kind of sensitivity and vulnerability in social and cultural interaction is "face". This is why the volume is entitled "The perils of face."
