Samuel Joseph Smith was born 20 February 1897 in North Ogden, Utah. His parents were Abiathar Richard Cydney Smith and Rebecca Nichols. He married Avera Marie Wright (1900-1980), daughter of Charles Henry Wright and Clara Marie Scoville, 14 December 1917 in Salt Lake City. They had eleven children. Samuel fought in World War I.
