What Was Could Be: Experiments Between Preservation and Architecture / Was War Werden Könnte: Experimente zwischen Denkmalpflege und Architektur

Monument Protection, Preservation, Collaborations, City Theater Basel, Schatzalp Hotel, Kongresshaus Zurich Preservation is progressive: In current efforts to shift towards more sustainable building practices (known in German as the Bauwende, or ‘building turnaround’), preservation and maintenance of the existing building stock play a central role. The alteration or conversion of an existing building is considerably more resource-efficient than a comparable new build. This is leading to changes in the nature of architecture itself: Where the focus used to be on new construction, building upon the built is increasingly considered the future of the discipline. In this context, the theory a...

The superREUSE Manifesto

The superREUSE Manifesto is a critical exploration of ideas, research and practices in reuse. -Reuse identifies insights into cities, buildings, interiors and objects constructed through working with extant material. Super is an elevated pitch for a 21st century that is characterised by responses to the challenges of the climate emergency and social justices. The superREUSE Manifesto coalesces ideas in the designed and built environment that react and work with these challenges. It is an uncompromising collection of ideas and propositions designed to stimulate its reader to rethink their position in relation to how we must transform everything into its superREUSE.

Between Conventional and Experimental

Between Conventional and Experimental

Mass housing and prefabrication shaped global modernist architecture like no other aspect of industrialised construction. This book offers a comprehensive exploration of how both conventional and experimental prototypes and series gave rise to an architecture for all and responded to crises, nation-building, and housing shortages within the context of transnational and regional research. The book’s contributions explore partially unearthed empirical ground, such as cases from Finland and Sweden, while others offer a fresh interpretation of prefabrication’s role in the history of global architecture, notably in the USSR and Italy. The chapters’ topics encompass colonial expansion, class, international collaboration, and the achievements and setbacks of industrialised design. The authors scrutinise the cultural impact of mass housing and prefabrication, tracing this influence through exhibitions, memory culture, and typologies, ultimately concluding with an outlook on the preservation and repair of structures and their adaptation for the future.

The Architecture of Full-Scale Mock-Ups looks at the theory and contemporary practice of creating full-scale architectural mock-ups. This book serves as an introduction to the various forms of full-scale mock-ups which occur today. To broaden the definition of mock-ups, Nick Gelpi dives deep into the use of mock-ups in seven high-profile and global contemporary case studies. Instead of the presentation drawings and final building photos, the documentation of case studies relies on process photos, interviews, and moments of tension in the execution of each building. With never-before-published content, case studies include buildings from all over the world, including the Quincho Tia Coral and Teleton Building, Copper House II, the Pérez Art Museum Miami, the Cité de l’Océan et du Surf Museum, and more. Investigating unique case studies to answer how and when full-scale mock-ups occur today, this book is ideal for professionals and students of architecture studying materials and representation, design-build, and professional practice.

A practical antidote to the mindset of disposability and wastefulness This volume addresses the widespread tendency to discard broken items rather than to refurbish them. Despite the negative ecological effects of overconsumption, overproduction and waste, the habit of replacing rather than repairing goods has persisted and even worsened over recent decades. To counteract this trend, students at the University of Applied Sciences in Munich and ETH Zurich have been developing imaginative concepts for repairing a wide variety of objects, applying them both manually and by using digital techniques such as 3D printing. Beyond restoration, many projects develop and improve the repaired objects constructively, materially, or even in terms of design, lending them new value. This publication presents a variety of approaches and projects, plus essays by notable personalities from the fields of architecture, preservation, materials science, design, manufacturing and craft.

Holkham

Holkham is awarded Five Stars, and appears in the Top Twenty greatest houses in England's "Thousand Best Houses by Simon Jenkins. Built between 1734 and 1765, Holkham - the Earl of Leicester's 25,000-acre estate in Norfolk - is a tribute to a time gone by. Paintings by Gainsborough, Poussin, Gheeraerts, Claude, Van Dyck and Rubens adorn the damask-covered walls of this great house. "Holkham" is full of exquisite works of art and is one of England's premier tourist destinations. The hall and its grounds continue to be a thriving, self-sufficient community, which offers visitors a unique perspective on rural life as it was lived during the estate's conception. This colourful guide to the house, its treasures and the park explores for the first time the landscape and the architectural history of Holkham, profiling the client for whom the mansion was conceived and built, detailing its fascinating construction process and describing the magnificent historic interiors.

Following the inaugural FABRICATE conference 2011 in London, the most important forum for international discussion on digital fabrication in architecture has resumed by Fabio Gramazio and Matthias Kohler at ETH Zurich. In contrast to the projects presented in 2011 at the Bartlett School of Architecture, which were balanced between practice and research, the questions about design and materialisation in architecture, construction, engineering, manufacturing, material and software design currently seem to be driven more by research institutions and young start-up entrepreneurs than by architectural practice. While digital fabrication technologies are becoming common practice in architecture for prototyping as well as in the realisation of buildings, contemporary research does not just investigate their further development, but presents ways to integrate them already in an early design phase to definitely overcome the still prevalent separation of design and making.
