Moving from the volatile 1960s into the 1970s, baseball faced many challenges. The growing strength of a players' union and the controversial movements of troubled franchises presented singular situations. The game's commissioner was a recent arrival, and, with free agency not yet a factor, a host of players were traded. Under new managers, several teams were emerging as potential fierce contenders for the top spot in their leagues. The Baseball Hall of Fame opened its doors to former Negro Leaguers, and several legacy ballparks reached the end of their service lives. Thoroughly researched and illustrated, this book covers the historical and cultural aspects of the national pastime in this era.

The first book to explore the entire history of two-way baseball players from the 19th century up to the modern era, this comprehensive work demonstrates that Shohei Ohtani and Babe Ruth are not the only players to excel at both pitching and batting. In-depth profiles examine how Ohtani and Ruth compare to 19th century star John Montgomery Ward and Negro League standouts Bullet Rogan, Martin Dihigo, Leon Day and Ted "Double Duty" Radcliffe as two-way players. This historical overview outlines the path each player took to reach greatness as a pitcher and a batter, and helps answer the fundamental question: who is baseball's greatest two-way player? Sixty additional Negro League players are covered for their two-way feats, plus an examination of top two-way players from the 19th century, Deadball Era, and Live-Ball Era--more than 130 players overall are featured. Also included is an overview of 25 top-hitting pitchers and a closer look at all the statistics that define a two-way player.

For over 60 years, the color barrier excluded Black ballplayers from the major leagues, forcing them to form their own teams and leagues. After Jackie Robinson broke down that barrier, Black players faced another: the barrier to the Hall of Fame. At the time of the founding of the Hall of Fame, segregation was firmly entrenched in baseball, and it was defended by the same power brokers who kept the Hall successful with their support. The fight for the recognition that Black players had earned on the field lasted nearly as long as the color barrier itself. This book presents the full history of that fight: the exclusion of Black players for so many years, the many efforts to fix that, and the fights for Hall of Fame recognition of the Negro Leagues that are still ongoing.
