As we consider the unfolding conditions of our lives through a mythological filter, archetypal qualities of behavior recognizably manifest. This empowers us to infuse value and meaning into our lives that are relevant to our personal experience. Nietzsche understood this process to be essential in the development of his Overman. Carl Jung called this process of bringing unconscious qualities of behavior into consciousness, individuation. Building on the structure of elementary ideasthe universal symbolism that transcends cultural and spiritual landscapesLiving Mythos presents a compelling alternative to the dependency doctrines of modern tradition, and it inspires us to imagine a tomorrow in which we have reclaimed the spiritual nature of our thoughts. Through an exploration of Norse mythology and the influence of Indo-European shamanism, we may begin to understand the mythological worldview as a form of ancient psychology, designed to awaken us to our inherent potential to create and become our own unique living mythos.

The Plank Grilling Cookbook

Planking — grilling atop a slab of wood — adds a lush, smoky flavor to foods with none of the labor-intensive mess of traditional pits and smokers. Though sales of planks are skyrocketing, there are few resources available that enable backyard cooks to take full advantage of this easy, exciting technique. The Plank Grilling Cookbook answers this growing need with an extensive array of recipes and helpful advice. Among the inventive offerings are entrees, such as Tuna with a Hoisin-Sherry Sauce, Lemon Herb Roast Chicken, Meat Loaf with Tomato and Red Pepper Sauce, and Sizzling Lamb Fajitas; vegetables and side dishes such as Stuffed Artichokes and Corn Guacamole; and even desserts, from Peach Sorbet to Pecan and Cinnamon Stuffed Apples with Caramel Sauce. The book helps readers choose between the different types of planks — cedar, maple, alder, hickory, cherry, and oak — and also features how-to and safety tips for successful plank grilling.

2024 SHIRLEY JACKSON AWARD WINNER Four gothic novellas from the novelist of Kill Creek and Violet, praised by the New York Times, National Public Radio, and the American Library Association. In The Door in the Field, a construction worker's bad day becomes a far worse night when drinks at an off-the-books bar send him down an unforeseeably bloody path. In The Boy in the Woods, something evil has infected the counselors at a summer camp, and a young boy will have to do anything he can to survive the night. In One Half of a Child’s Face, a woman spying on her daughter and ex-husband notices an odd painting hanging in an empty apartment . . . one that seems to call to the building’s children. In Wear Your Secret Like a Stone, a big-box clerk discovers that her book pick for a Halloween display echoes a dark secret hidden beneath the idyllic facade of her hometown. With this collection, Scott Thomas digs his hands into the soil of the American heartland and establishes himself as a master of Midwestern Gothic.
