Proceedings of the Innovative and Sustainable Infrastructure International Convention

This book presents selected papers from the Proceedings of the International Conference on Innovative Infrastructures, ICII 2023, held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, covering topic areas in mining geomechanics, ground control, engineering geology, geohazards, soft computing, and underground structures. The published articles cover the latest research studies in geotechnical and geoengineering with the focus of soft computing technology to solve complex geotechnical issues in mining, tunneling, and geotechnical structures. It also highlights state-of-the-art technologies adopted by the civil, geology, and mining industries which are not only commercially viable but also environmentally sustainable. The content of the papers appeals to researchers and industrial practitioners working in the field of geomechanics and geoengineering.

Conservative in Theology, Liberal in Spirit

In the early twentieth century, theological modernism was gaining ground in the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. Conservatives claimed that there were modernists on the mission field but that the Board of Foreign Missions was doing nothing about it. In Thailand, the executive secretary of the American Presbyterian mission did not want to address the issue, claiming that “almost all of our Mission . . . are conservative in their theology, and liberal in their spirit.” But was it true? In this book, Karl Dahlfred explores letters, reports, and other primary sources to reveal instances and indicators of modernism among Presbyterian missionaries in Thailand. Officially committed to making d...

IUTAM Symposium on The Physics of Wall-Bounded Turbulent Flows on Rough Walls

The study of wall-bounded turbulent ows is of considerable interest from both scienti c and practical view points. As such it has attracted a great deal of research over the last 100 years. Much research has concentratedon ows over smooth walls since these are simpler from experimental, numerical and theoretical standpoints. The ow over rough walls has still received considerable attention but progress has necessarilybeenslower.Perhapsthemostessentialproblem(certainlyfromaprac- cal point of view) is to be able to predict the skin-frictiondrag acting on a plate (or a body) given a certain known roughness characteristic of the surface. Unfortunately this has proved to be very dif cult since even the simplest rough surfaces can be characterised by a number of different parameters and we still cannot directly c- nectthese tothe uiddynamicdragin a givensituation.Varioustheoriesandmodels have been proposed in order to make progress but there is still some disagreement in the community as to the correct understanding of these important ows.
