Agent-Based Defeasible Control in Dynamic Environments

This volume, the 7th volume in the DRUMS Handbook series, is part of the aftermath of the successful ESPRIT project DRUMS (Defeasible Reasoning and Uncertainty Management Systems) which took place in two stages from 1989- 1996. In the second stage (1993-1996) a work package was introduced devoted to the topics Reasoning and Dynamics, covering both the topics of "Dynamics of Reasoning", where reasoning is viewed as a process, and "Reasoning about Dynamics", which must be understood as pertaining to how both designers of and agents within dynamic systems may reason about these systems. The present volume presents work done in this context extended with some work done by outstanding researchers...

A guide to mental toughness from the author of 80/20 Running: "Fitzgerald's research will help you become your own sports psychologist." —Joe Friel, endurance sports coach and author of the Training Bible series The greatest athletic performances spring from the mind, not the body. Elite athletes have known this for decades and now science is learning why it's true. In How Bad Do You Want It?, coach Matt Fitzgerald examines over a dozen pivotal races to discover the surprising ways elite athletes strengthen their mental toughness. Fitzgerald puts you into the pulse-pounding action of epic races from running, cycling, triathlon, XTERRA, and rowing with race reports and revealing post-race i...

GABA and Sleep

GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is the main neurotransmitter regulating sleep. The majority of drugs presently in use for the treatment of sleep disorders act by enhancing GABAergic neuronal inhibition. The GABA system is, therefore, of prime clinical relevance for the therapy of insomnia. The focus of this volume is on the neuropsychopharmacology and the clinical impact of the GABA system in regulating sleep and wakefulness. It presents molecular, neuropharmacological, systems-biological and clinical approaches to the understanding of the mechanism of action of GABA and GABAergic drugs. It also explores the role of GABA in the basic drives that affect sleep, and the influences that adapt sleep and wakefulness to external events.

A Future for Knowledge Acquisition

In the last few years rapid advances have been made in reproductive medicine, making it necessary for those involved to regularly update their knowledge. The purpose of this book is to describe the state of the art in this field, making it possible for the reader to gain an orientation among all the diagnostic and therapeutic potentials of modern reproductive medicine in order to advise patients fully. Chapters from the fields of gynecology, and reproductive medicine in a specific sense provide knowledge about these subjects. Authors of international standing have contributed chapters on their specialties. These chapters together form a book describing the state of the art in the diagnosis and therapy of sterility in gynecology and andrology.

Temporally Distributed Symptoms in Technical Diagnosis

Complex machines can fail in complex ways. Often the nature of the fault can be determined only through the interpretation of machine behavior over time. This book presents a novel approach to the representation and recognition of temporally distributed symptoms. Existing diagnostic expert systems usually operate under a set of simplifying assumptions that limit their applicability. A common assumption is that the device to be diagnosed has a static behavior, with the relation between inputs and outputs constant over time. In most realistic application domains this assumption is violated and both the normal, intended function of the device and the potential malfunctions are complex behaviors...

Expert Judgment and Expert Systems

This volume is an outgrowth of a NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Expert Judgment and Expert Systems," held in Porto, Portugal, August 1986. Support for the Workshop was provided by the NATO Division of Scientific Affairs, the U.S. Army Research Institute, and the U.S. National Science Foundation. The Workshop brought together researchers from the fields of psychology, decision analysis, and artificial intelligence. The purposes were to assess similarities, differences, and complementarities among the three approaches to the study of expert judgment; to evaluate their relative strengths and weaknesses; and to propose profitable linkages between them. Each of the papers in the present volume is directed toward one or more of those goals. We wish to express our appreciation and thanks to the following persons for their support and assistance: John Adams, Vincent T. Covello, Luis da Cunha, Claire Jeseo, B. Michael Kantrowitz, Margaret Lally, Judith Orasanu, R. M. Rodrigues, and Sandor P. Schuman.
