Ecological Risk Assessment of Contaminated Sediments
Although sediment toxicity/bioaccumulation testing and environmental risk assessment (ERA) originated together in the early 1980s, their separate evolution prompted experts from 21 states and 6 countries to integrate sediment quality assessment with ERA during this workshop. By critically evaluating existing approaches, this group of experts identifies principles and practices for sediment ecological risk assessment (SERA) that are designed to improve the scientific and regulatory communities' ability to assess environmental risks associated with contaminated sediments. The authors pinpoint critical applications (product assessment, navigational dredging, site clean-up) and pertinent issues (ecological relevance, methodological uncertainty) that address the evaluation of sediments as both a source and a sink for persistent aquatic contaminants.
