This book analyses the founding years of consumer law and consumer policy in Europe. It combines two dimensions: the making of national consumer law and the making of European consumer law, and how both are intertwined. The chapters on Germany, Italy, the Nordic countries and the United Kingdom serve to explain the economic and the political background which led to different legal and policy approaches in the then old Member States from the 1960s onwards. The chapter on Poland adds a different layer, the one of a former socialist country with its own consumer law and how joining the EU affected consumer law at the national level. The making of European consumer law started in the 1970s rathe...
This study fills a vital gap in the current literature on the effects of the financial and economic crisis, and features detailed reports from six European countries which form the empirical background for five analyses of different aspects of the social inclusion-exclusion dichotomy through over-indebtedness in Europe since 2008. The account shows how the current design of the consumer credit and mortgage system in Europe has helped to produce individual over-indebtedness while disregarding the consequential danger of social exclusion.
When the German Wehrmacht swarmed across Eastern Europe, an elite corps followed close at its heels. Along with the SS and Gestapo, the Ordnungspolizei, or Uniformed Police, played a central role in Nazi genocide that until now has been generally neglected by historians of the war. Beginning with the invasion of Poland, the Uniformed Police were charged with following the army to curb resistance, pacify the countryside, patrol Jewish ghettos, and generally maintain order in the conquered territories. Edward Westermann examines how this force emerged as a primary instrument of annihilation, responsible for the murder of hundreds of thousands of the Third Reich's political and racial enemies. ...
Recent decades have seen a sharp increase in financial competition, intensified by globalisation. Excessive risk-taking leading to inevitable business failures at times reached worrying proportions. A contributing factor arose from the complexities of the derivative and other new markets. This volume attempts to analyse and explain financial market developments at the turn of the millennium with the emphasis on the need for greater responsibility and a more ethical approach to financial decision-making.
Germany’s most successful business book of 2014 in English now It's no longer a question of whether the crash will happen, but when. All of the measures taken toward saving banks, national economies, and the euro boil down to the maximization of damages and state bankruptcy for Germany, for which case the expropriation of private citizens has long been in preparation. Government bonds, pension funds, life insurance policies and bank accounts - these are the things that will lose the most in a crash that should come sooner rather than later. Only then will the political and business sectors be open to making radical changes. When the crash comes, we'll need fast solutions! In their e-book, ...
In many legal systems around the world, whether civilian or common law, the doctrine of good faith is recognised as one of the general principles of contract law. By contrast, English law has taken a different approach, relying on a number of specific doctrines aimed at securing fair dealing but eschewing any general principle of good faith in contract. In the light of recent good faith provisions - such as those found in the EC Directives on Commercial Agents and on Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts, as well as in the Lando Commission's 'Principles of European Contract Law' and the UNIDROIT 'Principles of International Commercial Contracts' - it is open to debate whether the English law of...
