Crossing Languages to Play with Words

Wordplay involving several linguistic codes is an important modality of ludic language. This volume offers a multidisciplinary approach to the topic, discussing examples from different epochs, genres, and communicative situations. The contributions illustrate the multi-dimensionality, linguistic make-up, and the special interactive potential of wordplay across linguistic and cultural boundaries, including the challenging practice of translation.

Wordplay and Exclusion

Wordplay and Exclusion

This volume focuses on serious aspects of wordplay related to phenomena of exclusion, complementing previous research where its funny and innocent dimension has been foregrounded. Wordplay is not only an essential means of bonding people and reinforcing group identities, but it can also serve to exclude other addressees. This function of exclusion often is a key part of the communicative game at play. The papers in this volume, written by authors from a variety of countries, explore types and functions of exclusive wordplay and its inherently multi-addressed nature across different languages, cultures, and historical periods.

Manual of Applied Romance Linguistics

This handbook provides a systematic overview firstly of the basic concepts and secondly of current research topics and trends in Applied Romance Linguistics from a theoretical, methodological and empirical perspective. It takes account of both traditional and innovative research approaches. Following a general introduction to the field and its major topics, methods and objectives, the presentation is divided into four thematic sections (methods and methodology; language, society and knowledge; language acquisition and language education; specialised communication and transfer). The volume is geared towards researchers, teachers and students working in the fields of linguistic and communication studies, but also addresses the general public. It aims to provide useful information for anyone dealing with problems of language and communication in their professional or private lives, and illustrates career options for graduates of Romance Linguistics.

Word-Formation

This handbook comprises an in-depth presentation of the state of the art in word-formation. The five volumes contain 207 articles written by leading international scholars. The XVI chapters of the handbook provide the reader, in both general articles and individual studies, with a wide variety of perspectives: word-formation as a linguistic discipline (history of science, theoretical concepts), units and processes in word-formation, rules and restrictions, semantics and pragmatics, foreign word-formation, language planning and purism, historical word-formation, word-formation in language acquisition and aphasia, word-formation and language use, tools in word-formation research. The final chapter comprises 74 portraits of word-formation in the individual languages of Europe and offers an innovative perspective. These portraits afford the first overview of this kind and will prove useful for future typological research. This handbook will provide an essential reference for both advanced students and researchers in word-formation and related fields within linguistics.

The Metaphysics and the Epistemology of Meaning

This book develops the metaphysics of meaning along the lines set up by Paul Grice, defining the three central notions of what is meant, said and implicated. The Gricean notion of what is said is threatened by semantic underdetermination: If the sentence underdetermines the thought it is used to express, what is said cannot be the proposition expressed by the sentence and meant by the speaker. This leads to several questions: How far does semantic underdetermination reach? Do we have to extend or restrict the Gricean notion? Is what is said semantic or pragmatic? Keeping these metaphysical questions separate from the epistemological question of how the hearer understands what is meant, which is best explained by generalizing the Gricean theory of implicature derivation and combining it with a game-theoretic model, this book provides an original defense of a Gricean view in the ongoing debate about semantics and pragmatics. Jonas Pfister is a member of the meaning.cq research group at the University of Berne (Switzerland).
