Coal in Modern Britain

This is the first book to examine the social and cultural significance of coal in British society in the 19th and 20th centuries. An English-language translation of Charles-François Mathis's award-winning study, Coal in Modern Britain gets to the heart of Britain's evolving relationship with this controversial energy source. How did the general public use and manage coal on a daily basis? Did they readily accept it, did they reject it, and how? What were the material and cultural features of a society so reliant on coal? Historians have long considered the political, technical, and economic structures of energy systems, but here the vital social and cultural contexts are crucially laid bare...

Mechanics of Earthquake Faulting

The mechanics of earthquake faulting is a multi-disciplinary scientific approach combining laboratory inferences and mathematical models with the analysis of recorded data from earthquakes, and is essential to the understanding of these potentially destructive events. The modern field of study can be said to have begun with the seminal papers by B. V. Kostrov in 1964 and 1966. This book presents lectures delivered at the summer school ‘The Mechanics of Earthquake Faulting’, held under the umbrella of the Enrico Fermi International School of Physics in Varenna, Italy, from 2 to 7 July 2018. The school was attended by speakers and participants from many countries. One of the most important goals of the school was to present the state-of-the-art of the physics of earthquakes, and the 10 lectures included here cover the most challenging aspects of the mechanics of faulting. The topics covered during the school give a very clear picture of the current state of the art of the physics of earthquake ruptures and also highlight the open issues and questions that are still under debate, and the book will be of interest to all those working in the field.

Denaturalized

“In Denaturalized, Claire Zalc combines the precision of the scholar with the passion of a storyteller...This is a deftly written book. Zalc combines in an accessible style (smoothly translated by Catherine Porter) the stories of people trapped within a bureaucracy that was as obsessed, perhaps, with clearing files as with hunting Jews. In other words, Zalc reminds us how cruel the banality of indifference could be.”—Wall Street Journal Winner of the Prix d’histoire de la justice A leading historian radically revises our understanding of the fate of Jews under the Vichy regime. Thousands of naturalized French men and women had their citizenship revoked by the Vichy government during ...
