Embodied Activities in Face-to-face and Mediated Settings

This edited book revisits the concept of social ‘activities’ from an interactional perspective, examining how verbal, vocal, visual-spatial and material resources are deployed by participants for meaning-making in social encounters. The eleven original chapters within this volume analyse activities based on video recordings of naturalistic and naturally occurring social encounters from face-to-face and mediated settings in Chinese, Dutch, English, French, and German. Informed primarily by the methodological approaches of Conversation Analysis and Interactional Linguistics, the authors study embodiment in space and time in three distinct types of situations: objects in space, complex participation frameworks, and affiliation and alignment. Moreover, the book includes a theoretical and methodological discussion of how activities are constituted and visibly embodied in interaction. It will be of interest to students and scholars in sociology and linguistics in general, and face-to-face and mediated interaction in particular.

Researching and Teaching the Chinese Language

This book offers an in-depth exploration of the unique landscape of Chinese language learning and teaching in Canada. It is the first to highlight the distinctive features of Chinese language education in the country and to introduce the Canadian approach to teaching and researching Chinese language, termed the "Canadian school of Chinese education." This approach, largely unfamiliar to the global academic community, is illuminated in this book, filling a critical gap in the literature and providing a platform for Canadian voices and perspectives in the field. The book delves into original and under-investigated areas, addressing important issues in Chinese teaching and learning that require...

OKAY across Languages

OKAY has been termed ‘a spectacular expression’ and ‘America’s greatest invention.’ This volume offers an in-depth empirical study of the uses that have resulted from its global spread. Focusing on actions and interactional practices, it investigates OKAY in a variety of settings in 13 languages. The collected work showcases the importance of a holistic analysis: prosodic realization and the placement of OKAY in its larger sequential and multimodal context emerge as constitutive for distinct uses in individual languages. An inductive approach makes it possible to identify practices not previously documented, for example OKAY used for ‘qualified acceptance’ or as a ‘continuer’, and to document a core of recurrent, similar uses across languages. This work also outlines new research directions for comparative analysis by offering first insights into the diachronic development of OKAY’s uses and the relationship of OKAY to other particles in specific languages.

China's "New" Diplomacy

The authors of this book investigate one of the mostly hotly debated and significant questions of our times ‘what role will China be playing in world politics over the next twenty years’ by asking another controversial question ‘is China’s ‘new’ diplomacy a tactical or fundamental change?’ Bringing together Chinese and Western scholars of diplomacy the book highlights the view that diplomacy is both an instrument of foreign policy and a learning and socialising process that fosters both positive and negative change and is an important indicator of China’s future role. It further argues that there is little to suggest that China’s new diplomacy has a tactical revisionist agenda; however it is too early to be sure that China’s changed diplomacy is a fundamental one. Moreover, much will depend on the diplomacy of other major powers towards China and on China’s domestic politics.
