"Matrix functions and matrix equations are widely used in science, engineering and social sciences due to the succinct and insightful way in which they allow problems to be formulated and solutions to be expressed. This book covers materials relevant to advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in numerical linear algebra and scientific computing. It is also well-suited for self-study. The broad content makes it convenient as a general reference to the subjects."--
Yang Feng unexpectedly activated the Medicine King System when his girlfriend fell ill. Originally, he just wanted to use the system to treat and save people. However, he was reported by his girlfriend and several patients working together. "You're charging 5,000 yuan for a bottle of medicine. You're heartless!" "We just wanted free medicine. What's wrong with that?" Those he had once treated turned on him, harshly criticizing him. Overnight, Yang Feng became a target of public outrage, facing potential jail time. In court, he admitted to all the charges. Then, he sold his formulas to pharmaceutical companies. When the patients' conditions relapsed and they could no longer afford the now sky-high prices of the medicine, his girlfriend and the others broke down completely. "You accused me of selling fake medicine back then. Now that your illness is back, why are you crying?" Yang Feng vowed never to play the saint again. If they couldn't afford life-saving medicine, what did that have to do with him?
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Applied Parallel Computing, PARA 2004, held in June 2004. The 118 revised full papers presented together with five invited lectures and 15 contributed talks were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the proceedings. The papers are organized in topical sections.
In the past decades, model reduction has become an ubiquitous tool in analysis and simulation of dynamical systems, control design, circuit simulation, structural dynamics, CFD, and many other disciplines dealing with complex physical models. The aim of this book is to survey some of the most successful model reduction methods in tutorial style articles and to present benchmark problems from several application areas for testing and comparing existing and new algorithms. As the discussed methods have often been developed in parallel in disconnected application areas, the intention of the mini-workshop in Oberwolfach and its proceedings is to make these ideas available to researchers and practitioners from all these different disciplines.
