Land Tenure Challenges in Africa
This book provides a significant contribution to the literature on land reform in various African contexts. While the economic evidence is clear that secure property rights are a necessary condition for catalysing broad-based economic development, the governance process by which those rights are secured is less clear. This book details the historical complexity of land rights and the importance of understanding this history in the process of trying to improve tenure security. Through a combination of single country case studies, comparative case studies and regional comparisons, the book is unequivocal that good governance is paramount for improving the performance of land reform programmes. All attempts at moving towards more formal secure tenure require congruence with informal norms, beliefs and values, and a set of clear systems and processes to avoid corruption and unintended negative consequences.
Power, Participation, and Policy
Power, Participation, and Policy proposes an alternative approach to making sense of popular participation in the policy process, in light of the subtle workings of power in society. This study, based on field research carried out in Nepal, illustrates that the policy process is implicated in a web of "cultural politics" experienced by different stakeholders, namely their daily struggles to suture rifts in their identities in the face of competing demands arising from their daily social interaction. The constant renegotiations of the overall policy direction among decision-makers, combined with the contested nature of the policy implementation on the ground, provide a fertile ground for ordinary people to exert leverage over the unfolding of policymaking. Masaki therefore draws the conclusion that a potential for the "emancipation" of ordinary people is immanent in the day-to-day flow of policymaking.
The Winds of History
Based on extensive archival research in six countries and intensive fieldwork, the book analyzes the history of the village of Nkholongue on the eastern (Mozambican) shores of Lake Malawi from the time of its formation in the 19th century to the present day. Nature Conservation in Southern Africa
Nature conservation in southern Africa has always been characterised by an interplay between Capital, specific understandings of Morality, and forms of Militarism, that are all dependent upon the shared subservience and marginalization of animals and certain groups of people in society. Although the subjectivity of people has been rendered visible in earlier publications on histories of conservation in southern Africa, the subjectivity of animals is hardly ever seriously considered or explicitly dealt with. In this edited volume the subjectivity and sentience of animals is explicitly included. The contributors argue that the shared human and animal marginalisation and agency in nature conservation in southern Africa (and beyond) could and should be further explored under the label of ‘sentient conservation’.
