Lagrangian Analysis and Prediction of Coastal and Ocean Dynamics

Written by a group of international experts in their field, this book is a review of Lagrangian observation, analysis and assimilation methods in physical and biological oceanography. This multidisciplinary text presents new results on nonlinear analysis of Lagrangian dynamics, the prediction of particle trajectories, and Lagrangian stochastic models. It includes historical information, up-to-date developments, and speculation on future developments in Lagrangian-based observations, analysis, and modeling of physical and biological systems. Containing contributions from experimentalists, theoreticians, and modelers in the fields of physical oceanography, marine biology, mathematics, and meteorology, this book will be of great interest to researchers and graduate students looking for both practical applications and information on the theory of transport and dispersion in physical systems, biological modeling, and data assimilation.

Atlas of coloscopy

by Mario Banche, M.D. IX The neologism "coloscopy" (colonscopy, colonoscopy) is the latest addition to the vocabulary of endoscopy of the large intestine. just as the term "duodenoscopy" was in endoscopy of the upper digestive tract a few years ago. With the advent of the coloscope it is now possible to examine the large bowel more extensively and effectively than was formerly possible with the use of its rigid forerunner, the rectosigmoidoscope. The earliest rectoscopes, 11 endoscopes" introduced during the 19th century by Segales and Desormeaux (1826, 1853), were conceived for many uses-inspection of the urethra, bladder, uterus, rectum. Successive improvements eventually led to the constr...

This book is a collection of papers contributed by some of the greatest names in the areas of chaos and nonlinear dynamics. Each paper examines a research topic at the frontier of the area of dynamical systems. As well as reviewing recent results, each paper also discusses the future perspectives of each topic. The result is an invaluable snapshot of the state of the ?eld by some of the most important researchers in the area. The ?rst contribution in this book (the section entitled “How did you get into Chaos?”) is actually not a paper, but a collection of personal accounts by a number of participants of the conference held in Aberdeen in September 2007 to honour Celso Grebogi’s 60th birthday. At the instigation of James Yorke, many of the most well-known scientists in the area agreed to share their tales on how they got involved in chaos during a celebratory dinner in Celso’s honour during the conference. This was recorded in video, we felt that these accounts were a valuable historic document for the ?eld. So we decided to transcribe it and include it here as the ?rst section of the book.

From Newton to Chaos

The reader will find in this volume the Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute held in Cortina d' Ampezzo, Italy, between July 25 and August 6, 1993, under the title From Newton to Chaos: Modem Techniques for Understanding and Coping With Chaos inN-Body Dynamical Systems. This institute was the latest in a series of meetings held every three years from 1972 to 1990 in dynamical astronomy, theoretical mechanics and celestial mechanics. The proceedings from these institutes have been well-received in the international community of research workers in these disciplines. The present institute was well attended with 15 series of lectures being given by invited speakers: in addition some...

Shallow Flows

Shallow Flows

This text presents the key findings of the International Symposium held in Delft in 2003, which explored the process of shallow flows. Shallow flows are found in lowland rivers, lakes, estuaries, bays, coastal areas and in density-stratified atmospheres, and may be observed in puddles, as in oceans. They impact on the life and work of a wide variety of readers, who are here provided with a clear overview of the subject. Shallow flows are intrinsically turbulent. On one hand, there are strongly three-dimensional, small-scale turbulent motions and on the other hand, large-scale quasi-two-dimensional turbulence. This book explains and examines these differences and their effects with sections on transport processes in shallow flows; shallow jets, wakes and mixing layers; stratified and rotating flows in ocean and atmosphere; river and channel flows; and numerical modelling and turbulence closure techniques. The reader is provided with the pick of current studies and a fresh approach to the subject, with expert examination of a fascinating and crucial phenomenon of our world's water systems.

Astrophysical and Geophysical Flows as Dynamical Systems was the theme of the 1998 GFD Summer Program. With Antonello Provenzale at the helm we sailed headlong into the nonlinear world of astrophysical and geophysical fluid mechanics. Simultaneously, Charles Tresser gave several energetic presentations surrounding the dynamics of circle maps. Unfortunately our third planned speaker, John David Crawford, fell ill just prior to the program and could not participate. Sadly, John David passed away later in the summer. We will remember him at GFD from the excellent lectures he gave at the cottage during the summer of 1993. In a departure from usual practice, and in an effort to lend more coherence to the, at times, very wide ranging topics discussed at Walsh, GFD.
