En métrologie tridimensionnelle, l'outil privilégié de contrôle est actuellement la machine à mesurer tridimensionnelle (MMT). Une démarche métrologique appliquée à ce type d'équipement de mesure impose que la résultat de mesure soit accompagné d'une incertitude : lorsque ce paramètre n'est pas pris en compte, les décisions prises à partir des données de mesurage risquent d'être aberrantes.
