In late 1997 Indonesia's economy went into a tail-spin, culminating in social and political upheavals that saw Soeharto's resignation in May 1998, and resulting in a succession of presidents as Indonesia entered a period of democratization. These events are well known, even to casual observers, but Kees van Dijk has penned a magnificent account of Indonesia between 1997 and 2000 that fleshes out the story in rich detail and analysis. The volume itself closes as the soon to be ousted President Abdurrahman Wahid is facing two major corruption, collusion, and nepotism (korupsi, kolusi, and nepotisme or KKN) scandals and the political forces are arraying against him. The author has clearly sifte...

Islam and the State in Indonesia

This book explains the relationship between Islam and the state and politics in contemporary Indonesia. President Soeharto's departure from office in May 1998 brought tremendous and far-reaching impacts to Indonesia's political landscape. At least 181 new political parties came into being, a sizeable portion of which use Islam as their symbol and ideological basis.

Indonesian Electoral Behaviour

In Indonesias plural society, ethnicity and religion are often considered as two important independent variables to explain electoral behaviour. Many writers have used qualitative methods to relate the performance of political parties in terms of ethnicity and religion. This book questions these assumptions by looking at up-to-date data on the 1999 election and the 2000 population census. The authors, researchers from the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore, statistically examine the strength of the impact of religious and ethnic variables relative to those of socio-economic variables (education, per capita income, migration, urbanization, and poverty) on the electoral behaviour of the seven major political parties. Their analysis and findings, together with detailed population profiles in terms of religion, ethnicity and socio-economic conditions at the provincial and district levels, throws light on not only the 1999 election but also the forthcoming 2004 election and beyond.

Patronage Driven Democracy

This work builds on the research for my PhD in the Department of Politics and Public Policy, the Flinders University of South Australia. Many people and institutions have contributed to complete my study. I cannot mention all of them here, but I have to mention a few. Associate Professor Janet McIntyre, the principal supervisor and academic adviser during my research higher degree study. She encouraged me to better understanding human value-rationality, contexts and pragmatism in the issues of power and democracy. Dr Craig Matheson has expanded my understanding of rational irrationality in voting that shaped my work at the early stage. Prof Dr Yogi Sugito (the former Rector of Universitas Br...

When in May 1998 General Suharto eventually resigned, hopes were high that Indonesia would head towards a more democratic future. Have these hopes materialized in any way? This book provides an analysis of change and continuity as manifest in key legislation on the political system and human rights. Constitutional Amendments and new laws - amongst others on political parties, elections, the press, labour unions, human rights and human rights courts - are assessed against Suharto-era legislation as well as against international standards as laid down in international human rights instruments.
