British Housebuilders

British Housebuilders is the first comprehensive account of the corporate history of the twentieth-century speculative housebuilding industry - the firms that `supplied` those houses and the entrepreneurs who created those firms. The transition from the local housebuilders of the 1930s, through the regional diversification of the 1960s, to the national housebuilders of today is charted via a series of industry league tables. The rationale for the growth in national firms is analysed. The conventional explanation of economies of scale is rejected: instead, the stock market is found to play a key role both in facilitating acquisitions and in demanding growth from its constituent companies. The supply-side analysis also addresses the frequent corporate failures: succession issues, lack of focus and the 1974 and 1990 recessions have played their part in equal measure. British Housebuilders provides the first opportunity to review the evidence drawn from a century of speculative housebuilding; it is only with this historical perspective that sound judgements can be made on the corporate role in housebuilding.

The Great Eastern Railway in South Essex

A comprehensive history of three British railway lines, "nicely illustrated [and] impressively informative" ( Midwest Book Review). This is the history of the Great Eastern Railway's lines from Shenfield to Southend, Wickford to Southminster, and Woodham Ferrers to Maldon, including their ancestor. It is the only comprehensive history of all three lines and was researched using both previously published and unpublished material. The history covers not only the history of the lines in question but also a sample of services from the opening of them to the present day, the motive power that was and is used on them, and a topographical description of them. The book is ideal not only for railway enthusiasts but for those interested in the local history of the area served by the Great Eastern Railway.

This book provides a broad overview on training in Minimal Access Surgery, with expert opinions from leaders in the field clarifying the definitions and terminology related to competence and accreditation. It also provides expert advice on how to set up a training unit and explores the role and impact of all types of simulations on training including virtual reality simulation. How to design a competency-based training curriculum in advanced laparoscopic surgery is also explored along with in depth examination of the role of assessment and competency based accreditation. Training in Minimal Access Surgery is a valuable resource for all health care professionals who are involved in training and education in Minimal Access Surgery including trainers and supervisors. There is well established and robust evidence to support the benefits of laparoscopic surgery in terms of better pain control, fewer complications and shorter length of stay with an earlier return to work. Hence, there is now widespread adoption of laparoscopic techniques in many surgical specialties including colorectal and morbid obesity surgery across the world.
