Balduin Möllhausen, 1825 in Bonn geboren und 1905 in Berlin gestorben, gehörte in seiner Zeit zu den bekanntesten Schriftstellern Deutschlands. Am Ausgang der Romantik stehend, in einer Zeit verstärkter Industrialisierung, befriedigte er mit seinen Werken universale Sehnsüchte von Lesern, die sich der kühler und nüchterner werdenden Welt des technischen Zeitalters entfremdet fühlten. Drei ausgedehnte Reisen hat Möllhausen in den 1850er Jahren in den damals noch wirklich 'Wilden Westen' der USA unternommen. Die erste entsprach reinem Abenteuertum. Sie dauerte fast drei Jahre. In dieser Zeit lebte er als Jäger und Trapper. Die beiden späteren Reisen unternahm er im Auftrag der Geographischen Gesellschaft zu Berlin und der Regierung der Vereinigten Staaten. Mit der vorliegenden Arbeit wird am Beispiel seines Lebens und Wirkens ein Zeitporträt entworfen. Möllhausen verkörperte beides: sowohl den zivilisationsflüchtigen, der vor dem "Tod der Wölfe" Europas in die amerikanische Wildnis floh, als auch den ruhigen, stetig an seinem Erfolg arbeitenden Bürger Preußens. Einen Typus also, dessen Zwiegespaltenheit als europäische Grundfigur heute so aktuell ist wie damals.
