Beyond the Translator’s Invisibility

Beyond the Translator’s Invisibility

The question of whether to disclose that a text is a translation and thereby give visibility to the translator has dominated discussions on translation throughout history. Despite becoming one of the most ubiquitous terms in translation studies, however, the concept of translator (in)visibility is often criticized for being vague, overly adaptable, and grounded in literary contexts. This interdisciplinary volume therefore draws on concepts from fields such as sociology, the digital humanities, and interpreting studies to develop and operationalize theoretical understandings of translator visibility beyond these existing criticisms and limitations. Through empirical case studies spanning areas including social media research, reception studies, institutional translation, and literary translation, this volume demonstrates the value of understanding the visibilities of translators and translation in the plural and adds much-needed nuance to one of translation studies’ most pervasive, polarizing, and imprecise concepts.

Linguistic Diversity in Professional Settings

Linguistic Diversity in Professional Settings

Linguistic diversity is a cultural asset in our globalized world. But it can also pose challenges for individuals, for organisations, and also for societies. This volume focuses on professional settings and their needs, policies and practices. In higher education, these range from general policy making at the institutions themselves to specific multilingual approaches in curriculum development to linguistic practices in international teams and cooperations, as well as linguistic landscapes. The studies show the challenges which come along with linguistic diversity and internationalization. They also highlight different national and organisational contexts and show links between language choice, emotion and identity, as well as educational and ideological goals. The volume thus illustrates the multifaceted and complex nature of this subject.

Transfiction and Bordering Approaches to Theorizing Translation

This collection seeks to expand the centers from which scholars theorize translation, building on themes in Rosemary Arrojo’s pioneering work on transfiction and the influence of bordering disciplines in investigating and elucidating questions central to the field of translation studies. Chapters by scholars around the world theorize translation from diverse perspectives, drawing on a wide range of literatures, genres, and media, including fiction, philosophy, drama, and film. Half the chapters explore the influence of Rosemary Arrojo’s work on transfiction and the ways in which fictional representations of translators and translation can shed new light on theoretical concerns. The other...
