Authors, Audiences, and Old English Verse

Authors, Audiences, and Old English Verse re-examines the Anglo-Saxon poetic tradition from the eighth to the eleventh centuries and reconsiders the significance of formulaic parallels and the nature of poetic authorship in Old English. Offering a new vision of much of Old English literary history, Thomas A. Bredehoft traces a tradition of 'literate-formulaic' composition in the period and contends that many phrases conventionally considered oral formulas are in fact borrowings or quotations. His identification of previously unrecognized Old English poems and his innovative arguments about the dates, places of composition, influences, and even possible authors for a variety of tenth- and eleventh-century poems illustrate that the failure of scholars to recognize the late Old English verse tradition has seriously hampered our literary understanding of the period. Provocative and bold, Authors, Audiences and Old English Verse has the potential to transform modern understandings of the classical Old English poetic tradition.

Critics have traditionally treated the Old English poems about saints as individual, autonomous works, relating but little to one another except in a broadly generic way. Bjork challenges the traditional view with an examination of the major structural feature that all the poems share: direct discourse. Syntactical and rhetorical analyses of the five poems reveal a consistent use of spech in creating stylistic norms or ideals - stylistic icons - in spiritually perfect figures. In all the poems the speech of the saints in formal, rhetorical, and balanced, the stylistic analogue both of their immutable fith and of the Christ-saint figural connection. The speech of all other characters is measured against this standard; their ability or inability to meet the saintly ideal in language reflects their level of spiritual awareness. The consistency with which these patterns appear sheds new light on the conventions of Old English poetic hagiography.

The New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature: Volume 1, 600-1660

More than fifty specialists have contributed to this new edition of volume 1 of The Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature. The design of the original work has established itself so firmly as a workable solution to the immense problems of analysis, articulation and coordination that it has been retained in all its essentials for the new edition. The task of the new contributors has been to revise and integrate the lists of 1940 and 1957, to add materials of the following decade, to correct and refine the bibliographical details already available, and to re-shape the whole according to a new series of conventions devised to give greater clarity and consistency to the entries.

Positive Emotions in Old English Language and Thought

The study of emotional expressions is rapidly growing, but many researchers overlook the dynamic and historical aspects of these expressions. This book proposes new methods for analyzing the diachronic evolution of emotional expressions within their sociohistorical contexts, focusing on Old English positive emotions. Combining cognitive linguistic and historical sociolinguistic approaches, it addresses the underrepresented study of emotions like happiness, love, and pride in Old English. By analyzing historical lexical data, the book explores how positive emotions reflect sociolinguistic variables and societal changes, offering insights into semantic shifts and evolving emotional conceptualizations. It also examines the role of cultural factors in shaping figurative language related to emotions.
