Between North and South

Emily Wharton, a Philadelphian, in 1842 married Charles Sinkler, a midshipman in the US Navy. Sinkler took his 19-year-old wife to live among his family, wealthy cotton planters outside Charleston, SC. For much of her married life Emily traveled between the two places; her letters, edited by her great-great-granddaughter (a librarian at the U. of Tennessee), were retrieved from the attics of relatives Northern and Southern. LeClercq sees her forebear as a pioneer of sorts, adapting well to the rural, antebellum South--a paternalistic society where opportunities for women were circumscribed--while also thriving in cosmopolitan Philadelphia and endearing herself to the people whose lives she touched in both worlds. c. Violent Women in Print

West Germany's terrorist period of the 1970s is still a troubling and fascinating subject for Germans, not least because of the high proportion of women involved, most notoriously Ulrike Meinhof. The present study examines the West German print media of the 1960s and 1970s, from the right-wing 'Bild' to the left-leaning 'Der Spiegel'to explore how violent women - both terrorists and others - were represented in image and text. This is the first book to explore print-media representations of German terrorism from an explicitly gendered perspective, and one of very few books in English to addres.

This sixth volume in the European Festival Studies series stems from a joint conference (Venice, 2013) between the Society for European Festivals Research and the European Science Foundation’s PALATIUM project. Drawing on up-to-date scholarship, a Europe-wide group of early-career and experienced academics provides a unique account of spectacular occasions of state which influenced the political, social and cultural lives of contemporary societies. International pan-European turbulence associated with post-Reformation religious conflict supplies the context within which the book explores how the period’s rulers and élite families competed for power – in a forecast of today’s divided world.
