The Implosion of Negativity

Gatekeepers

The romantic idea of the writer as an isolated genius has been discredited, but there are few empirical studies documenting the role of "gatekeeping" in the literary process. How do friends, agents, editors, translators, small publishers, and reviewers-not to mention the changes in technology and the publishing industry-shape the literary process? This matrix is further complicated when books cross cultural and language barriers, that is, when they become part of world literature. Gatekeepers builds on the work of Pierre Bourdieu, Randall Collins, James English, and Mark McGurl, describing the multi-layered gatekeeping process in the context of World Literature after the 1960s. It focuses on...

Crises

Paul Auster's works enjoy a lasting popularity as examples of late-twentieth century American fiction. Auster criticism, however, has so far mainly focused on a few selected writings - notably the novels of The New York Trilogy, and Moon Palace - and their characteristics. The writer's overall theme as well as his recent works are rarely taken into consideration. This study closes the gap by providing a comprehensive appraisal of this author's complete oeuvre. By virtue of its detailed analysis of Paul Auster's central theme and delineation of its development, the writer's works can be positioned within the framework of contemporary American literature, and a tendency within the general development of postmodernist literature can be made out.

Charles Darwin is a crucial figure in nineteenth-century science with an extensive and varied reception in different countries and disciplines. His theory had a revolutionary impact not only on biology, but also on other natural sciences and the new social sciences. The term 'Darwinism', already popular in Darwin's lifetime, ranged across many different areas and ideological aspects, and his own ideas about the implications of evolution for human cognitive, emotional, social and ethical capacities were often interpreted in a way that did not mirror his own intentions. The implications for religious, philosophical and political issues and institutions remain as momentous today as in his own time. This volume conveys the many-sidedness of Darwin's reception and exhibit his far-reaching impact on our self- understanding as human beings.
