Feminist Companion to Judges
The book of Judges is replete with female figurations, and has, therefore, received a lot of attention from feminist critics. This volume of essays, however, changes the motivation behind this apparent centrality of female figures, claiming that in fact strong androcentric premises underlie the texts. The overall theme of this sparkling collection focusses on wives, daughters and mothers, and their relationships. An introductory section surveys the women of Judges, investigation satire, paradigm and deviation and the midrashic sources; Brenner and Van Dyck investigate the story and song of Deborah; Fuchs and Exum turn their attention to Jephthah's daughter; Amit and Reinhartz look at women in the Samson story. Finally, three essays, including one by Mieke Bal, deal with the brutal finale of the book in chapters 19-21.

The Intercourse of Knowledge
This groundbreaking book, which builds on the author's earlier work in On Gendering Texts, studies how, by what means and to what extent human love, desire and sex, and possibly even 'sexuality', are gendered in the Hebrew Bible. Following a classification and gendering of the linguistic and semantic data, the investigation looks into the construction of male and female bodies in language and ideologies; the praxis and ideology of sex, procreation and contraception; deviation from socio-sexual boundaries (e.g. incest, rape, adultery, homosexuality, prostitution); eroticism and "pornoprophetics". Finally, the work discusses some of the wider sociological and theological implications of the findings.
Introducing Feminist Images of God
Encouraging a range of inclusive, pluralist expressions in which women experience the Divine power, often in the figure of Sophia, the divine Wisdom. This book is an introduction to recent thinking on, and experience of the Divine, reflecting the work of women from diverse contexts. Early attemps to move beyond the restriction of God-language to 'Father' language and to open up the possibilities of a more inclusive way of praying have led to a richness and variety of experiences of God and the world of the sacred. God experienced in the struggle for justice is one such area. While similarities and connections are shown between, for example, Jewish, womanist, and Latin American women, their distinctiveness and diversity is respected. Women's experience of God does not flinch from ambiguity and tragedy; so long as the figure of Sophia, Wisdom, integrates new dimensions of experience the infinite depths of the Divine Mystery are still to be plumbed.
