The Turkish Novel and the Quest for Rationality is the first book to contextualize the Turkish novel with regard to the intellectual developments motivating the Turkish modernization project since the 18th century. The book provides a dialectical narrative for the emergence and development of the Turkish novel in order to highlight the genre’s critical role within the modernization project. In doing so, it also delineates the changing forms the novel assumes in the Turkish context from a platform for new literature to a manifestation of crisis in the face of totalizing rationality. Vis-a-vis modernization's engagement with rationality, The Turkish Novel and the Quest for Rationality reveals unexplored ways of conceptualizing the development of the genre in non-western contexts.

The Orient in Music - Music of the Orient

“OM”, a fundamental meditation sound present in the cultures of Buddhism, is a syllable full of philosophical and transcendental meanings. The category of the Orient, as contrasted, antithetical and complementary to the Occident (West) and its culture, appears to be one of the most interesting and long-lasting issues discussed in the humanities. European fascination with Oriental cultures has found multifaceted manifestations in science, art, fashion and beliefs. Music, as an important element of cultural communication, has always been well suited for transitions and inspirations. The relationship between the Orient and Western music encompasses a wide and fascinating scope of problems, ...

Multilingual Literature as World Literature

Multilingual Literature as World Literature examines and adjusts current theories and practices of world literature, particularly the conceptions of world, global and local, reflecting on the ways that multilingualism opens up the borders of language, nation and genre, and makes visible different modes of circulation across languages, nations, media and cultures. The contributors to Multilingual Literature as World Literature examine four major areas of critical research. First, by looking at how engaging with multilingualism as a mode of reading makes visible the multiple pathways of circulation, including as aesthetics or poetics emerging in the literary world when languages come into cont...

"Old İstanbul aristocrats, Turkish teashops, imperial diamonds, and great and humble mosques are juxtaposed with the almost non-descriptive portrayals of neighborhood friendships, family relations, and local public figures who could be found in any city in Turkey or, perhaps, any Eastern setting where the old way of life adopts new and Western counterparts. Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar's portrayal of modern, post-Ottoman Turkey weaves a theater of the absurd, suggestively representative of the early days of the young Republic."--Book jacket.

Mısır'da Kısa Öykü (Dün ve Bugün) (Akdem Yayınları)

Mısır’da kısa öykü türünün doğuşu ve gelişim sürecinin derinlemesine ele alındığı eserde öncelikle klasik anlatı tarzının taklit edilme süreci incelenmiş, ardından eldeki kaynaklar doğrultusunda önde gelen yazarların öykülerinden örnekler sunulmuştur. Seçilen öyküler, doğrudan yazarların koleksiyonlarından, Mısır’daki kısa öykü literatürüne dair kaynaklardan ve Arap öykücülüğü üzerine yapılan derlemelerden titizlikle seçilmiştir. Eserde, yalnızca kısa öykü örneklerine yer vermekle kalınmamış, aynı zamanda bu metinler çeşitli yönleriyle tahlil edilerek, Mısır edebiyatında kısa öykünün dönüşüm süreci ortaya konmuştur. Ayrıca, konu bağlamında zaman zaman Türk edebiyatındaki öykü anlayışıyla karşılaştırmalar yapılarak, Mısır ve Türk hikâyeciliği arasındaki benzerlikler ve farklılıklar analiz edilmiştir. Alanında önemli araştırmacıların görüşleriyle zenginleştirilen bu çalışma, Mısır kısa öykücülüğüne dair kapsamlı bir bakış açısı sunmaktadır.
