Numerical Simulation in Tunnelling

For many years the Austrian tunneling industry has demanded that research is urgently required to establish a theoretical basis for the New Austrian TUnneling Method and to assist site engineers in the often difficult day to day decisions. In particular it was felt that numerical models need to be improved considerably in order to be able to act as useful tools in predicting soil/rock mass behavior during tunneling. The required improvement not only refers to the quality of the models but also to their ease of use. As long as an experienced modeler is required to spend days in preparing the input and in interpreting the results the models will not be useful at the tunnel site. It is hearteni...

Computational Methods for Fracture

This book offers a collection of 17 scientific papers about the computational modeling of fracture. Some of the manuscripts propose new computational methods and/or how to improve existing cutting edge methods for fracture. These contributions can be classified into two categories: 1. Methods which treat the crack as strong discontinuity such as peridynamics, scaled boundary elements or specific versions of the smoothed finite element methods applied to fracture and 2. Continuous approaches to fracture based on, for instance, phase field models or continuum damage mechanics. On the other hand, the book also offers a wide range of applications where state-of-the-art techniques are employed to solve challenging engineering problems such as fractures in rock, glass, concrete. Also, larger systems such as fracture in subway stations due to fire, arch dams, or concrete decks are studied.

Progress in Continuum Mechanics

This book gives an insight into the current developments in the field of continuum mechanics. Twenty-five researchers present new theoretical concepts, e.g., better inclusion of the microstructure in the models describing material behavior. At the same time, there are also more applications for the theories in engineering practice. In addition to new theoretical approaches in continuum mechanics and applications, the book puts an emphasis on discussing multi-physics problems.

Doors to Hidden Worlds

  • Categories: Art

40 years of science visualization The visualization of often-encrypted data reveals new, previously hidden, but quite real worlds to humankind. Art adopts these insights and uses them to create new dimensions. This book brings together a wide range of contributions on visualization in science, media, and art. Renowned experts and associates of the Science Visualization Lab at the University of Applied Arts Vienna present examples of outstanding and innovative visualization projects and provide insight into their working methods. The book follows a variety of approaches to expanding perception and rendering the invisible visible. “If the doors of perception were cleansed, every thing would appear to man as it is, infinite.” – William Blake Insight into the thinking and working methods of renowned scientists, media experts, and artists Lavish publication with numerous illustrations and AR features With contributions by Ina Conradi / Mark Chavez, Christian Köberl, Walter Köhler, Thomas Matzek, Markus Müller, Ruth Schnell, Victoria Vesna / James K. Gimzewski, Manfred Wakolbinger, and others
