The Mathematical Olympiad Handbook

The Mathematical Olympiad Handbook

Mathematical Olympiad competitions started in Hungary at the end of the nineteenth century, and are now held internationally. They bring together able secondary school pupils who attempt to solve problems which develop their mathematical skills. Olympiad problems are unpredictable and have no obvious starting point, and although they require only the skills learnt in ordinary school problems they can seem much harder. The Mathematical Olympiad Handbook introduces readers to these challenging problems and aims to convince them that Olympiads are not just for a select minority. The book contains problems from the first 32 British Mathematical Olympiad (BMO) papers 1965-96 and gives hints and outline solutions to each problem from 1975 onwards. An overview is given of the basic mathematical skills needed, and a list of books for further reading is provided. Working through the exercises provides a valuable source of extension and enrichment for all pupils and adults interested in mathematics.

The research analyses the following problems: Decision and risk at immigration service (police) work, remote identification, biometrical systems and identification, probability of identification errors and their consequences, identification algorithms and their implementation, morphological analysis for decision making, practical experiments. Research novelty: the research links up probability, risk theories with their practical application at immigration service work; Tasks of the research: 1) To find out risk factors; 2) to analyse risk impact on decision making; 3) to define risk diminishing factors; 4) to put into practice risk diminishing factors. Research methods: The theoretical ones: To analyse references and service documentation; The practical ones: Observation, surveys, experiments, analysis.

The Mathematical Playground

Welcome to The Mathematical Playground, a book celebrating more than thirty years of the problems column in the MAA undergraduate magazine, Math Horizons. Anecdotes, interviews, and historical sketches accompany the puzzles, conveying the vibrancy of the “Playground” community. The lively prose and humor used throughout the book reveal the enthusiasm and playfulness that have become the column's hallmark. Each chapter features a theme that helps illustrate community: from the Opening Acts—chronicling how interesting questions snowball into original research—to the Posers and Solvers themselves. These stories add an engaging dimension beyond the ample mathematical challenge. A particu...

A Mathematical Mosaic

Ravi Vakil, a preeminent winner of International Mathematics Olympiads, develops some powerful problem-solving ideas underpinning the major branches of mathematics and weaves them into a mosaic that reveals their interconnections. The mathematics is presented at the level of the capable high school mathematics student, but there is much substance for the advanced undergraduate and the intelligent lay reader. You will find this book an invaluable source of enrichment problems and ideas. The style is informal, friendly, and often humorous. In this book, Professor Vakil profiles seven other mathematics olympiad winners including Noam Elkies, the youngest professor to achieve tenure at Harvard.--Publisher.
