With a foreword by Diego Quaglioni This book attempts to determine the degree to which the modern fate of the Western legal tradition depends on one of the most long-standing debates of the Middle Ages, the distinction between potentia Dei absoluta and ordinata (God’s absolute and ordered power). The mediaeval investigation into God’s attributes was originally concerned with the problem of divine almightiness. It underwent a slow but steady displacement from the territory of theology to the freshly emerging proceedings of legal analysis. Here, based on the distinction, late-mediaeval lawyers worked out a new terminology to define the extent of the power-holder’s authority. This effort would give rise, during the early modern era, to the gradual establishment of the legal-political framework represented by the concepts of the prince and sovereignty.

Pindar’s Pythian Twelve is the only choral lyric epinicion in our possession composed for the winner of a non-athletic competition. Often regarded as an ode of straightforward interpretation, close analysis of the text reveals that it presents several challenges to modern readers. This book offers an updated translation of the text and an investigation of the main interpretative issues of the epinicion with the aid of historical linguistics. By identifying devices which Pindar might have inherited from earlier periods of poetic language, the study provides insights into the thematic aspects of the ode as well as on Pindar’s compositional technique.

The book is an interdisciplinary study on Pythian Three, Nemean Three and Nemean Five, three Pindaric epinicians, which share a special use of the word τέκτων, ‘fashioner’. In these victory odes, the term τέκτων refers to creators of immaterial objects and occurs close to the first and/or the final words of the poems, in connection with key themes, namely: health, poetry, choral performance, movement as opposed to stasis. The study shows that structures in which Pindaric metaphors are found have parallels in Indo-European languages of ancient attestation: Old Indic and Avestan.
