U.S.-Israeli Relations at the Crossroads

The dramatic global, regional and domestic changes that occurred after the unpredicted collapse of the Soviet Union have created a need to examine a host of theoretical and practical issues, particularly in regard to security and foreign relations. The U.S.-Israeli 'special relationships' is no exception. This seemed, and is still viewed as, one of the most solid and stable bilateral relationships. Yet the new international and domestic reality in both the U.S. and Israel warrants a thorough re-examination. The essays in this collection deal with, among other things, the general global setting and its implications for this relationship; with 'hard' strategic factors; and less tangible aspects, such as American images of Israel, the attitudes of other American religious denominations, and the situation of the American Jewish community.

The Shadow of the Past

In The Shadow of the Past, Gregory D. Miller examines the role that reputation plays in international politics, emphasizing the importance of reliability-confidence that, based on past political actions, a country will make good on its promises-in the formation of military alliances. Challenging recent scholarship that focuses on the importance of credibility-a state's reputation for following through on its threats-Miller finds that reliable states have much greater freedom in forming alliances than those that invest resources in building military force but then use it inconsistently. To explore the formation and maintenance of alliances based on reputation, Miller draws on insights from bo...

Law and Politics in Peaceful Use of Nuclear Energy

  • Categories: Law

This book analyzes the law and politics in the peaceful use of nuclear energy. The “inalienable right” as provided for in Article IV of the Treaty on the Non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) has unexpectedly been an interpretation riddle, which has brought about many controversies among NPT Party States, like those in the 1970s between the U.S. and its allies, and today in the Iranian nuclear problem and in the North Korean nuclear crisis. This book offers a detailed review and analysis of the lifetime of the norm on the right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy: what factors give rise to a possible design of the dynamic treaty obligation, how they are made in drafting the relevant treaty provisions, and how subsequent practice plays a role in the interpretation. The usefulness of the general rule of interpretation is also challenged in this book, and an interdisciplinary perspective on interpretation is otherwise proposed to better understand the interplay of the law and politics in the nuclear nonproliferation regime.

Understandings of Russian Foreign Policy

Scholars from Asia, Europe, and North America working with the support of the Finnish Institute of International Affairs combine their efforts to bring us new insights into how Russia has conducted its foreign affairs since the fall of Communism. Drawing on both archival sources and interviews, they cover such major issues as Russia's decision to use military force in Chechnya, its reactions to NATO expansion, and its emergent relations with Japan and East Asia. The contributors are Eunsook Chung, Henrikki Heikka, Ted Hopf, Andrea Lopez, Hiroshi Kimura, Sergei Medvedev, and Christer Pursiainen.
