This open access book aims to provide an overview of state-of-the-art approaches to 3D documentation from a practical perspective and formulate the most important areas for future developments. Bringing together a wide range of case studies, examples of best practice approaches, workflows, and first attempts to establish sustainable solutions to pressing problems, this book offers readers current practical advice on how to approach 3D archaeology and cultural heritage. Divided into five parts, this book begins with an overview of 3D archaeology in its present state. It goes on to give insights into the development of the technology and recent cutting-edge applications. The next section identifies current challenges in 3D archaeology and then presents approaches and solutions for data management of a large number of 3D objects and ways to ensure sustainable solutions for the archiving of the produced data. Landscapes of Difficult Heritage
This book studies how people negotiate difficult heritage within their everyday lives, focusing on memory, belonging, and identity. The starting point for the examination is that temporalities lie at the core of understanding this negotiation and that the connection between temporalities and difficult heritage remains poorly understood and theorized in previous research. In order to fully explore the temporalities of difficult heritage, the book investigates places in which the incident of violence originated within different time periods. It examines one example of modern violence (Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina), one example of where the associated incident occurred during medieval times (the Gazimestan monument in Kosovo), and one example of prehistoric violence (Sandby borg in Sweden). The book presents new theoretical perspectives andprovides suggestions for developing sites of difficult heritage, and will thus be relevant for academic researchers, students, and heritage professionals.
Going Forward by Looking Back
Catastrophes are on the rise due to climate change, as is their toll in terms of lives and livelihoods as world populations rise and people settle into hazardous places. While disaster response and management are traditionally seen as the domain of the natural and technical sciences, awareness of the importance and role of cultural adaptation is essential. This book catalogues a wide and diverse range of case studies of such disasters and human responses. This serves as inspiration for building culturally sensitive adaptations to present and future calamities, to mitigate their impact, and facilitate recoveries.
PoCA (Postgraduate Cypriot Archaeology) 2012
This volume brings together papers presented at the 12th edition of Postgraduate Cypriot Archaeology (PoCA), an annual conference concerning the material culture of ancient, medieval and modern Cyprus, taking into account various aspects from different research projects conducted by researchers specialized in many fields of expertise. The contributions to this book cover multiple branches of study, including prehistory, archaeology, history, art history, religious history architecture and modern textiles studies, offering an interdisciplinary approach. Within this wide-ranging academic setting, a chronological span from the Early Cypriot period, that is to say from the 3rd millennium B.C. onwards, to modern times is covered. Contributions illuminate various aspects of Cypriot culture, such as funerary areas, settlement patterns, different types of artworks, and historical issues. Despite the great variety of archaeological and historical subjects, there is a special focus on Bronze Age Cypriot culture that helps to highlight a number of significant aspects of this important and formative period on the island of Aphrodite.
Neue Materialien des Bayerischen Neolithikums 2
Vom 18. bis 20. November 2016 fand im Kloster Windberg bei Straubing zum zweiten Mal nach 2014 eine Tagung unter dem Titel "Neue Materialien des Bayerischen Neolithikums" statt. Dabei wurden neue, bislang unpublizierte Fundkomplexe vorgestellt und diskutiert, die alle Phasen der Jungsteinzeit vom Altneolithikum bis zum Endneolithikum abdeckten und die aus verschiedenen Landesteilen des Freistaats Bayern sowie aus dem benachbarten Oberschwaben stammten. Mit einer diachronen und Regionen übergreifenden Betrachtung charakteristischer Inventare aus den verschiedenen Landschaftsräumen und Zeitabschnitten wurde das Ziel verfolgt, neues Material zu erschließen und damit die archäologische Quellenbasis zu erweitern und der Neolithforschung in Bayern neue Impulse zu geben. Im vorliegenden Band sind acht der Vorträge dieser Tagung zusammen gestellt.
Clara's Tale

Written in beautiful prose, Clara's Tale is a magnificent novel that spans the political events of the second half of the 20th century.
