Communication for Command and Control Systems provides a thorough exposition of the basic theoretical and practical features involved in the design of communication networks for command and control systems. This book focuses primarily on the practical side of computer-controlled communication. This text concentrates on the communication sides of the subject by surveying the means of transferring data between the various processing points and by appraising their potential advantages and possible defects in implementation. In this respect, this book should prove useful for the practicing engineer engaged in command and control system design in civil, military, and administrative spheres. Accompanying materials such as charts and illustrations are also provided as useful reference. For the system designers, this text is a unique reference; this book also presents comparison tables that can be of practical assistance in the selection of the blocks for specific operations.

The nation is failing to deploy command and control systems commensurate with the nature of likely future warfare, with modern weapons systems, or with our available technological or industrial base. This quotation was the opening statement in a report on Command and Control Systems Management issued nearly a decade ago by a Task Force of the Defense Science Board. To correct the then perceived failings, that Task Force addressed itself to the following areas: how to assure the operational effectiveness of systems for the support of command and control; how to enable the military commands to upgrade and evolve their command and control systems within standards and specifications stemming fro...

Command and control system is defined by: (1) outlining a tentative model of the embedding military process consisting of five functions (sense, analyze, decide, act, communicate) at command points, with emphasis on the interfaces between these functions: (2) describing 18 military command and control systems in operation or under development; (3) noting how analysts have categorized this kind of system; and (4) indicating resemblances between this kind of system and two non-military organizations. It is suggested that methodology for improving the derivation of concepts for command and control systems can be improved by profiting from past experience concerning five inter-related trouble-po...

No command and control system will ever remove the uncertainty associated with the battlefield; at times these systems introduce more friction than they were designed to reduce. More systems require more operators, more communications bandwidth, and more organizational overhead. Command and control systems are moving the Marine Corps away from maneuver warfare because they lead to explicit control, centralization, and the mitigation of creativity. Modern command and control systems can be a double-edged sword to the commander. The true benefits that these systems bring are shared information, resources, and intelligence. Instead of enabling senior commanders to control subordinates, command and control systems should be used to facilitate maneuver warfare by empowering all decision makers. In keeping with the tenets of maneuver warfare, the goal of command and control systems employed in the Marine Corps should be to give leaders at the lowest levels access to all the resources that the Marine air-ground task force can bring to the fight.
