Winner of an Outstanding Academic Title Award from CHOICE Magazine Most available cryptology books primarily focus on either mathematics or history. Breaking this mold, Secret History: The Story of Cryptology gives a thorough yet accessible treatment of both the mathematics and history of cryptology. Requiring minimal mathematical prerequisites, the book presents the mathematics in sufficient detail and weaves the history throughout the chapters. In addition to the fascinating historical and political sides of cryptology, the author—a former Scholar-in-Residence at the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) Center for Cryptologic History—includes interesting instances of codes and ciphers i...

Unsolved!

"In 1953, a man was found dead from cyanide poisoning near the Philadelphia airport with a picture of a Nazi aircraft in his wallet. Taped to his abdomen was an enciphered message. In 1912, a book dealer named Wilfrid Voynich came into possession of an illuminated cipher manuscript once belonging to Emperor Rudolf II, who was obsessed with alchemy and the occult. Wartime codebreakers tried--and failed--to unlock the book's secrets, and it remains an enigma to this day. In this lively and entertaining book, Craig Bauer examines these and other vexing ciphers yet to be cracked. Some may reveal the identity of a spy or serial killer, provide the location of buried treasure, or expose a secret s...

Introduction to Modern Cryptography, the most relied-upon textbook in the field, provides a mathematically rigorous yet accessible treatment of this fascinating subject. The authors have kept the book up-to-date while incorporating feedback from instructors and students alike; the presentation is refined, current, and accurate. The book’s focus is on modern cryptography, which is distinguished from classical cryptography by its emphasis on definitions, precise assumptions, and rigorous proofs of security. A unique feature of the text is that it presents theoretical foundations with an eye toward understanding cryptography as used in the real world. This revised edition fixed typos and incl...

Practical Mathematical Cryptography provides a clear and accessible introduction to practical mathematical cryptography. Cryptography, both as a science and as practice, lies at the intersection of mathematics and the science of computation, and the presentation emphasises the essential mathematical nature of the computations and arguments involved in cryptography. Cryptography is also a practical science, and the book shows how modern cryptography solves important practical problems in the real world, developing the theory and practice of cryptography from the basics to secure messaging and voting. The presentation provides a unified and consistent treatment of the most important cryptographic topics, from the initial design and analysis of basic cryptographic schemes towards applications. Features Builds from theory toward practical applications Suitable as the main text for a mathematical cryptography course Focus on secure messaging and voting systems.

Techniques for Designing and Analyzing Algorithms Design and analysis of algorithms can be a difficult subject for students due to its sometimes-abstract nature and its use of a wide variety of mathematical tools. Here the author, an experienced and successful textbook writer, makes the subject as straightforward as possible in an up-to-date textbook incorporating various new developments appropriate for an introductory course. This text presents the main techniques of algorithm design, namely, divide-and-conquer algorithms, greedy algorithms, dynamic programming algorithms, and backtracking. Graph algorithms are studied in detail, and a careful treatment of the theory of NP-completeness is ...

For a long time, the Australian Signals intelligence (or Sigint) story has been kept secret. Until now… Why does Australia have a national signals intelligence agency? What does it do and why is it controversial? And how significant are its ties with key partners, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and New Zealand, to this arrangement? Revealing Secrets is a compelling account of Australian Signals intelligence, its efforts at revealing the secrets of other nations, and keeping ours safe. It brings to light those clever Australians whose efforts were for so long entirely unknown or overlooked. Blaxland and Birgin traverse the royal commissions and reviews that shaped Australiaâ€...

The Accretion and Obscured Growth of Supermassive Black Holes

This thesis describes the application of state-of-the-art high-energy X-ray studies to the astronomical quest for understanding obscured active galactic nuclei (AGN). These AGN are supermassive black holes growing by accretion of matter located in the nuclei of galaxies. The material that feeds these black holes also obscures them from view, rendering them challenging to study. It is possible to study them by effectively 'X-raying' galactic nuclei to peer through these obscuring veils. Beginning with the proof-of-concept application of novel X-ray Monte Carlo codes to the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope ARray (NuSTAR) spectrum of a known heavily obscured AGN, the thesis establishes the relev...
