Within France, the expression “duty of memory” (le devoir de mémoire)speaks to a complex and ever-evolving relationship with the past. Emerging in the 1970s, this term raised questions about memorialization which dominated public debates in the 1990s, highlighting France’s entanglements with colonialism and the Holocaust. Drawing on a variety of interviews, archival sources, and data surveys, author Sébastien Ledoux spotlights how the trajectory of this term offers a lens for understanding contemporary societies’ relationship with the past on a global scale.
The fall of France in June 1940, La Débâcle, posed a challenge to France's understanding of itself. Could the existing “sacred” narrative of French history established by the Third Republic hold in the face of the defeat of France’s military and political systems, both built upon its foundations? The French Historical Narrative and the Fall of France: Simone Weil and her Contemporaries Face the Debacle focuses on assessments of the Debacle and places Simone Weil's writings of 1938 to 1943 within this continuum. This study recreates the debate in those fraught years to posit a “horizon of expectations” within which to place and better appreciate Simone Weil’s writing of the period, far reaching and bold but hardly “crazy” (as De Gaulle is said to have characterized her ideas).
This volume presents a selection of articles which explore methodological and applicative aspects of textual data analysis. Divided into four parts, it begins by focusing on statistical methods, and then moves on to problems in quantitative language processing. After discussing the challenging task of text mining in relation to emotional and sentiment analyses, the book concludes with a collection of studies in the social sciences and public health which apply textual data analysis methods. The refereed contributions were originally presented at the 16th International Conference on Statistical Analysis of Textual Data (JADT 2022), which took place in Naples, Italy, on July 6-8, 2022. The biennial JADT meeting discusses theories, problems, and practical uses of textual data analysis in various fields, sharing a quantitative approach to the study of lexical, textual, pragmatic or discursive features of information expressed in natural language.
What are the implications of strategic manoeuvring for the activity of the simultaneous interpreter? This is the main question addressed in The Quest for Argumentative Equivalence. Based on the analysis of a multilingual comparable corpus named ARGO, the book investigates political argumentation with an eye to its reformulation by interpreters. After reporting and discussing a series of case studies illustrating interpreters’ problems in the political context, the study reconstructs the prototypical argumentative patterns used by Obama, Cameron, Sarkozy and Hollande not only in a hermeneutical perspective, but also considering interpreters’ need to reproduce them into a foreign language. Situated at the intersection of Argumentation Theory and Interpreting Studies, the book provides a contribution to the descriptive study of political argumentation, highlighting the presence of interpreters as a key contextual variable in political communication and deepening the study of the interlinguistic and translational implications of the act of arguing.
Faced with a full-blown crisis, a growing number of journalists are engaging in seemingly unjournalistic practices such as creating and maintaining databases, handling algorithms, or designing online applications. “Data journalists” claim that these approaches help the profession demonstrate greater objectivity and fulfill its democratic mission. In their view, computational methods enable journalists to better inform their readers, more closely monitor those in power, and offer deeper analysis. In Computing the News, Sylvain Parasie examines how data journalists and news organizations have navigated the tensions between traditional journalistic values and new technologies. He traces the...
A lexicon of interesting political facts, The Politics Book is a snapshot of where the language of Politics has got to. It has always been the richest of languages, because of the vivid way in which many of our politicians express themselves, from the sound-bites with which they woo the voters to the devastating put-downs they use on each other. If a week in politics is a long time, twelve years is an eternity. It is that long since Brewer's Politics, the precursor of this volume, first appeared, and in that time the lexicon has grown exponentially. From Abu Ghraib to Zippergate, words, phrases, concepts, movements and people of whom we could have had no conception in 1993 are now part of our heritage. Twelve years ago New Labour had yet to be born, sleaze was an American phenomenon, no European Commission had ever been removed, a presidential election decided by the Supreme Court seemed inconceivable, and a chain of terrorist atrocities on the scale of 9/11 even more so.
