"Not to be served, but to serve" Unlike the Gospels of Luke and John, Mark's Gospel never explicitly reveals any authorial intent. In A Ransom for Many, John J. R. Lee and Daniel Brueske identify Mark 10:45 as the heart of Mark's Gospel. This single verse is the pivot point of Mark's structure, themes, and message. Mark 10:45 is the key that unlocks the Gospel's unique focus on true discipleship. Learn how Jesus's faithfulness is both a summons and pattern for all who carry their cross and follow him.

Christological Rereading of the Shema (Deut 6.4) in Mark's Gospel

In Mark's Gospel, the Shema language of Deut 6.4 is not merely reiterated in a traditional sense but reinterpreted in a striking way that links Jesus directly and inseparably with Israel's unique God. Such an innovative rereading of the Shema must be understood in light of (a) various elements involved in and surrounding each of the three monotheistic references (Mark 2.7; 10.18; 12.29) relating to their respective literary contexts, and (b) Mark's nuanced, complex, and even paradoxical portrait of Jesus' relationship to God throughout his gospel. John J.R. Lee shows that Mark's use of the one-God language implies that his Jesus is not merely one who, as a Shema-observant Jew, speaks on behalf of God but also one whose status and significance fundamentally correspond to those of Israel's unique deity.

In Whispers of Revolution, renowned biblical scholar Michael Bird slices a path through the tangle of conspiracy theories, older hypotheses, and scholarly debates to propose a compelling idea: the historical Jesus was driven by the conviction that through his words and work, his mission and message, God was unveiling his kingship in a way that would rescue Israel and eventually restore the whole world. This careful and concise scholarly work covers a wide range of topics related to the historical Jesus and his context. Bird studies Jesus in light of archaeology, Judean history, and apocalypticism. He scrutinizes sayings of Jesus and stories about Jesus, challenging many scholarly paradigms to offer a portrait of Jesus that avoids both sensationalism and pious simplification. The result is a story of Jesus that puts him firmly in the world of ancient Galilee and Judea and explains how this man, crucified by the Romans, became the catalyst for a movement that would defy and then consume the Roman empire. This important contribution will appeal to scholars, students, and all readers looking for a fresh examination of the life of Jesus.

The Word from the Beginning

"And the Word became flesh" John's Gospel famously opens with a poetic prologue about the Word. However, after these initial verses, the theme of God's Word incarnate seems to fade. The silence is only apparent. In The Word from the Beginning, Bruce G. Schuchard reunites John's prologue with the rest of his Gospel. What Jesus does in the Gospel embodies who Jesus is in the prologue. Jesus's words and actions reveal and unfold his unique identity as the Word. Jesus is indeed God's Word enfleshed. This theological reading of John's Gospel unifies Jesus's identity, words, and work, opening up implications for Johannine Christology.
