In modern mathematical physics, classical together with quantum, geometrical and functional analytic methods are used simultaneously. Non-commutative geometry in particular is becoming a useful tool in quantum field theories. This book, aimed at advanced students and researchers, provides an introduction to these ideas. Researchers will benefit particularly from the extensive survey articles on models relating to quantum gravity, string theory, and non-commutative geometry, as well as Connes' approach to the standard model.
Over the course of a scientific career spanning more than fifty years, Alex Grossmann (1930-2019) made many important contributions to a wide range of areas including, among others, mathematics, numerical analysis, physics, genetics, and biology. His lasting influence can be seen not only in his research and numerous publications, but also through the relationships he cultivated with his collaborators and students. This edited volume features chapters written by some of these colleagues, as well as researchers whom Grossmann’s work and way of thinking has impacted in a decisive way. Reflecting the diversity of his interests and their interdisciplinary nature, these chapters explore a variety of current topics in quantum mechanics, elementary particles, and theoretical physics; wavelets and mathematical analysis; and genomics and biology. A scientific biography of Grossmann, along with a more personal biography written by his son, serve as an introduction. Also included are the introduction to his PhD thesis and an unpublished paper coauthored by him. Researchers working in any of the fields listed above will find this volume to be an insightful and informative work.

Kurt Symanzik was certainly one of the most outstanding theoretical physicists of our time. For thirty years, until his untimely death in 1983, he helped to shape the present form of quantum field theory and its application to elementary particle physics. In memoriam of Kurt" Symanzik leading scientists present their most recent results, giving, at the same time, an overview of the state of the art. This collection was originally published in Vol. 97, 1/2 (1985) of Communications in Mathematical Physics. They range over various inter related topics of interest to Kurt Symanzik. We hope that making this collection available in an accessible and inexpensive way will benefit the physics communi...
"J.E. Moyal has been pronounced 'one of Australia's most remarkable thinkers'. Yet, he was, essentially, a scientific maverick. Educated in a modest high school in Tel Aviv, he took himself to France to train as an engineer, statistician and mathematician and escaped to England as France fell. It was from outside academia that he entered into communication with the 'high priest' of British theoretical physics, P.A.M. Dirac, challenging him with the idea of a statistical basis of quantum mechanics. Their correspondence forms the core of this book and opens up an important and hitherto unknown chapter for physicists, mathematicians and historians of science. Moyal's classic paper, 'A statistical basis for quantum mechanics', also reproduced here in full, has come to underlie an explosion of research and to underpin an array of major technological developments."--Publisher's description.
This book gives its readers a unique opportunity to get acquainted with new aspects of the fruitful interactions between Analysis, Geometry, Quantum Mechanics and Number Theory. The present book contains a number of contributions by specialists in these areas as an homage to the memory of the mathematician Erik Balslev and, at the same time, advancing a fascinating interdisciplinary area still full of potential. Erik Balslev has made original and important contributions to several areas of Mathematics and its applications. He belongs to the founders of complex scaling, one of the most important methods in the mathematical and physical study of eigenvalues and resonances of Schrödinger operators, which has been very essential in advancing the solution of fundamental problems in Quantum Mechanics and related areas. He was also a pioneer in making available and developing spectral methods in the study of important problems in Analytic Number Theory.
A collection of papers presented at a conference in Rome on operator algebras and quantum field theory. Invited contributions on noncommutative dynamical systems, the Baum-Cohnes and the Novikov conjecture, the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, and Banach Space aspects are included.
This volume contains papers presented at the University of Iowa 1985 Summer Conference in honor of H.-J. Borchers, N. M. Hugenholtz, R. V. Kadison, and D. Kastler and gives a systematic, up-to-date treatment of the fruitful interaction that the last two decades have brought between operator algebras and mathematical physics. Special attention is paid to an overview of the algebraic approach to quantum field theory and in particular, to quantum statistical mechanics. More than half the papers culminate with a presentation of new results which have not appeared previously in journals, and with a few exceptions, these new results are presented with complete proofs. This book is addressed to gra...
