James Baldwin’s Later Fiction examines the decline of Baldwin’s reputation after the middle 1960s, his tepid reception in mainstream and academic venues, and the ways in which critics have often mis-represented and undervalued his work. Scott develops readings of Tell Me How Long the Train’s Been Gone, If Beale Street Could Talk, and Just Above My Head that explore the interconnected themes in Baldwin’s work: the role of the family in sustaining the arts, the price of success in American society, and the struggle of black artists to change the ways that race, sex, and masculinity are represented in American culture. Scott argues that Baldwin’s later writing crosses the cultural divide between the 1950s and 1960s in response to the civil rights and black power movements. Baldwin’s earlier works, his political activism and sexual politics, and traditions of African American autobiography and fiction all play prominent roles in Scott’s analysis.

Valor and Vulnerability

Intimacy, vulnerability, precarity, resiliency, and loss are ingredients of any life, though they take on particular shape and tone when we listen to the experiences of boys and men. The voices and stories of men and boys are invitations for pastoral ministers and theologians to understand and respond to their joys, struggles, and sorrows, as well as to recognize and affirm their courage and strengths. In this book, thirteen scholars in pastoral theology from diverse backgrounds and perspectives collaborate in engaging art, literature, the social sciences, and cultural artifacts to explore the intersection of masculinity and religious life in rich and varied forms. Their aim, in part, is not only to deepen and appreciate wide-ranging experiences of boys and men but also to attend and respond to systemic realities that contribute to or undermine their flourishing.

Roster of Revolutionary Soldiers in Georgia

Mrs. McCall's roster of Georgia soldiers in the Revolution was compiled over many years. The work as a whole is cumulative, with only slight, albeit significant, differences in the kinds of information which may be found in one volume versus another. Volume I of this work contains the records of hundreds of Revolutionary War soldiers and officers of Georgia, with genealogies of their families, and lists of soldiers buried in Georgia whose graves have been located. Volumes II and III are also published by Clearfield Company. The arrangement of Volume II is similar to that of Volume I; however, it contains records of officers and soldiers not only from Georgia but from other states, many of whose descendants later came to Georgia because of liberal land grants. Volume III, the longest of the work, is similar in scope to Volume II except that the majority of the entries are for Georgia officers and soldiers, with only some material relating to other states. The three volumes, each of which is indexed, refer to as many as 20,000 persons overall.

Like many of the historical and genealogical books written during the 1800's and early 1900's, this work consists of two main sections: the "History of Stonington," which consumes the book's first 200 pages, and concludes with the 500 page, "Genealogical Register of Stonington Families." Beginning with the original patents in 1631, the author summarizes the history of the town, and addresses the development of the various facets of society, such as their religious institutions, the military component, government, infrastructure, commercial development, the various wars endured, and other historical events. The narrative is filled with the names of residents involved with, or prominent in, th...
