Creating Equity and Quality
This monograph is the first in a series of reports related to the Successful Secondary Schools Study in three Canadian provinces, a study that will contribute to high student achievement outcomes for students of low socioeconomic status. This document provides a synopsis of the literature and research dealing with successful and effective schools, school improvement, and the effects of socioeconomic status on overall student learning. The particular focus is on practices in high-achieving schools with low socioeconomic status. Chapter 1 introduces the Successful Secondary Schools Study, and chapter 2 considers the literature on socioeconomic status and student achievement. Chapter 3 provides a historical view of school effectiveness, and chapter 4 considers linking school effectiveness and school improvement. The review of research shows that schools can make a difference and can help students overcome the harmful effects of socioeconomic status. The Descendants of Isaac W. Zimmerman
Izaac Zimmerman (1806-1886) married Elizabeth Drum (1806-1875). They lived in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. Descendants and relatives migrated to Illinois, Wisconsin, Texas, California and elsewhere.
School Effectiveness and Improvement
The Third International Congress for School Effectiveness, held at the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute, was an additional link in the chain of efforts, forged in the late 1960s, to improve schools. Reports on reform efforts are received from every quarter. An impressive body of knowledge has accumulated concerning processes of change and improvement in the schools. This raises many questions in the area of policy and research regarding the implementation, dissemination, and sustainability of effect of the various projects, as well as the evaluation criteria of the intervention programs. These were the questions under discussion at the Congress for School Effectiveness in 1990. They will continue to concern educators and researchers in the field for years to come.
