Health Promoting Settings in the 21st Century: New Approaches and Competencies to Address Complexity and Inequity in an Increasingly Globalized World

The Ottawa Charter specifies that health promotion “has to be facilitated in schools, homes, workplaces and community settings” because “health is created and lived by people within the settings of their everyday life; where they learn, work, play and love”. COVID-19 had a profound impact on people’s lives and settings-based approaches have been developed in different shapes and formats. COVID-19 has also highlighted social vulnerabilities and laid bare how structural drivers of health inequity interact with class, race, ethnicity, gender, and education. Evidence is needed to document how these determinants can be addressed using settings-based approaches, and how new settings such as digital media, theories and frameworks can be used to tailor context appropriate strategies. Evidence is also needed to address challenges related to sustainability, resilience, and adaptation of complex systems in view of global health issues such as geopolitical instability, climate change and migration, as well as competencies needed to address them.

Doing Fieldwork in Centres of Power

This book considers the challenges posed by fieldwork in centres of power to researchers in the social sciences, with a focus on deliberative assemblies. It includes work by an international and interdisciplinary group of scholars united around a common interest in producing complementary knowledge about today’s political institutions based on qualitative approaches. The chapters feature various case studies on specific issues that arose from the authors’ fieldwork, as well as broader theoretical syntheses. The contributors offer some practical tools and solutions for others who would like to engage in this type of research, given the difficulties and complexities of doing fieldwork in centres of power and the lack of methodological resources currently available. The volume is valuable reading for anthropologists, sociologists, political scientists and others with an interest in the ethnography of politics.

Healthy Landscapes

This book responds to the need for a comprehensive and detailed theoretical framework and systemic design approaches to improve mental, physical, social, behavioral, and ecological health in urban environments. Although rapid urban development has created enormous economic and social value, it has also brought problems that have posed serious threats to the health of urban residents. Healthy Landscapes begins by reviewing practical experience, as well as theoretical and scientific evidence, from several related disciplines around the world. This is used to construct a provisional framework consisting of ten theoretical pathways for the environment to promote mental, physical, social, behavior...

The Routledge Handbook of Content and Language Integrated Learning

Content and language integrated learning (CLIL) is an increasingly popular educational approach given its dual focus on enabling learners to acquire subject-matter through an additional language, while learning this second language in tandem with content. This Handbook provides a comprehensive overview of recent CLIL developments, illustrating how CLIL has been uniquely conceptualised and practised across educational and geographical contexts. Divided into six sections, covering language and language teaching, core topics and issues, contexts and learners, CLIL in practice, CLIL around the world, and a final section looking forward to future research directions, every chapter provides a balanced discussion of the benefits, challenges and implications of this approach. Representing the same diversity and intercultural understanding that CLIL features, the chapters are authored by established as well as early-career academics based around the world. The Routledge Handbook of Content and Language Integrated Learning is the essential guide to CLIL for advanced students and researchers of applied linguistics, education and TESOL.
