Medical Missionaries and Colonial Knowledge in West Africa and Europe, 1885-1914
This open access book offers an entangled history of hygiene by showing how knowledge of purity, health and cleanliness was shaped by evangelical medical missionaries and their encounters with people in West Africa. By tracing the interactions and negotiations of six Basel Mission doctors, who practised on the Gold Coast and in Cameroon from 1885 to 1914, the author demonstrates how notions of religious purity, scientific health and colonial cleanliness came together in the making of hygiene during the age of High Imperialism. The heyday of evangelical medical missions abroad coincided with the emergence of tropical medicine as a scientific discipline during what became known as the Scramble for Africa. This book reveals that these projects were intertwined and that hygiene played an important role in all three of them. While most historians have examined modern hygiene as a European, bourgeois and scientific phenomenon, the author highlights both the colonial and the religious fabric of hygiene, which continues to shape our understanding of purity, health and cleanliness to this day.

Annotation Over the past years, research into the Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) and its treatment options has progressed enormously and new insights have greatly improved the quality of life of those affected. For many years, Urs Eiholzer has been engaged in the care of children with PWS and their families. He has published a great number of seminal scientific articles and contributions and supports a comprehensive, integrated treatment approach, taking into account both the biological and the psychological aspects of the syndrome. This easily understandable book is specifically suited for non-professionals and presents the clinical picture of the syndrome, its genetic cause, state-of-the-art research results and treatment options as used in the author's out-patient clinic. Each Case Is Different
Provenance research is so much more than a search for origin: It offers new perspectives on objects, collections, their histories, and the multifaceted relationships embedded within them. The Museum der Kulturen Basel is systematically examining its collection for coloniality and highlighting the central importance of collaborating with communities in the Global South. This work also reveals how complex and demanding ethnological provenance research is. The Museum der Kulturen Basel is one of the five state museums of the Canton of Basel-Stadt and, with a collection of over 340,000 objects from all regions of the world, it is Switzerland's largest ethnological museum. Managing this collection –acquiring, preserving, securing, exhibiting, and mediating the collection – is the core mission around which the museum's activities are centered. In recent years, provenance research and collaboration with so-called "source communities" have played a prominent role.
