Green Synthesis of Nanomaterials: Cytotoxicity and Drug Delivery

Over the past few decades, the increasing requirement for green chemistry and nanotechnology led to the adoption of green synthetic routes for the synthesis of nanomaterials using plants, microorganisms, and others. Hence, the green synthesis of nanomaterials has been considered by researchers through an eco-friendly path, which has led to much research in recent years on the synthesis of nanomaterials using plants as a non-toxic, cost-effective, accessible, easy, and environmentally friendly synthetic pathway. Synthesized nanomaterials through green chemistry are non-toxic and can be a good choice for medical applications such as drug delivery, imaging, biotechnology, and biomedical. In the...

Antibiofilm Strategies

Bacteria and fungi are able to aggregate together or on surfaces in densely packed microcolonies, facilitated by extracellular polymeric substances for cell protection and stability. These biofilms have proven to be extremely hard to eradicate and remove once established. In chronic infections, this condition can result in a high degree of morbidity and mortality as regular antibiotic treatments are ineffective against biofilms. In industrial facilities, the formation of biofilms can ruin production and result in enormous financial losses. In this book, the current state of antibiofilm research is presented by experts from around the world. Novel, cutting-edge techniques and new optimized st...

Renin-Angiotensin System

Exploring the contractile activity of smooth muscle segments isolated from various organs of healthy animals and animals with experimentally induced diabetes, she obtained original data about angiotensin II-induced force and time parameters. For the first time, she established the effect of ghrelin on angiotensin II-provoked contraction of the urinary bladder. Original data on the role of both types of angiotensin receptors for the contractile activity of the various segments of the gastrointestinal tract and bladder were obtained. By applying specific software for force and time parameter analysis, the contribution of different types of angiotensin receptors on muscle contractility has been shown. The new methodology was used to analyze the data obtained during the registration of smooth muscle relaxation activity, which allows the determination of not only the magnitude of the mechanical response but also the parameters related to the time and speed of the contractions. Plasma renin activity models have been developed using mathematical approaches to predict the effect of different drug doses on the behavior of the system.

Current Status of Natural Products Targeting Alzheimer’s Disease

Despite more than fifty years of intensive research on Alzheimer’s disease (AD) drug discovery, up till now only four medicines are approved by FDA for its treatment; among which three are acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors (donepezil, galantamine, and rivastigmine) and one is N-Methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonist memantine. These medications were launched during the initial research for AD but were not able to provide satisfactory results because of their limited efficacy and numerous side effects. The high-profile failure of late-stage clinical trials by prominent pharma firms for biomolecules that showed promising results in experimental models has added to the dissatisfaction of d...

Featuring traditional knowledge, the book Phytoadaptogenic Properties of Medicinal Plants offers an insight into diverse medicinal plants with their inherent phytotherapeutic characteristics. Since the prehistoric era, botanicals have been enlisted at the uppermost ladder in the survival of human existence. Though modern medicinal systems remain vital, at times of challenges or pandemics botanicals continue to serve as front liners, supporting people’s health and well-being by regulating the body’s inherent five defense systems such as angiogenesis, regeneration, DNA and epigenetics, microbiome, and immune system. The medicinal plants function as phytoadaptogens due to their intrinsic ab...
