From Hegel to Windelband
In the 19th century, the history of philosophy becomes the history of a particular science. Modern philosophical historiography is an ambivalent project. On the one hand, we find an affirmative concept of Bildung through tradition and historical insight; on the other, there arises a critical reflection on historical education in the light of an emerging critique of modern culture. Language, Truth and Democracy
The aim of this volume is to investigate three fundamental issues of the new millennium: language, truth and democracy. The authors approach the themes from different philosophical perspectives. One group of authors examines the use of language and the meaning of concepts from an analytic point of view, the ontology of scientific terms and explores the nature of knowledge in general. Another group examines truth and types of relation. A third group of authors focuses on the current factors influencing our concept of democracy and its legal foundations and makes reference to moral aspects and the question of political responsibility. The chapters provide the reader with an overview of current philosophical problems and the answers to these questions will be decisive for future development.
Hermeneutics
The book presents the development of hermeneutics, from reflection on the techniques and rules of correct interpretation of cultural products, through theoretical speculations on the essence of interpretation, to the emergence of a certain direction of contemporary philosophy. A direction for which the concepts of understanding and interpretation become basic categories, a kind of guiding thread reaching to the foundations of philosophical knowledge. The author presented the emergence of hermeneutics as a separate field of humanities education. The novelty of this book is an attempt to formulate – on the basis of the findings of the classics of contemporary hermeneutics: Dilthey, Heidegger, Gadamer and Ricoeur – the foundations of the hermeneutic position in ontology, epistemology, aesthetics, ethics, politics and anthropology.
Negative Knowledge
The advent of Modernity was accompanied by a radical criticism of traditional metaphysics. In particular since the 20th century, rationality is predominantly conceived of as positivistic and scientistic, reducing reality to what is positively knowable. The price to pay is the cutting out of any kind of phenomenon of negativity. The present volume explicitly explores the philosophical and epistemological potential of negativity. The contributions brought together in this book tackle the question of negativity from historical as well as from systematical perspectives. From different angles, they defend the claim that philosophical approaches recurring to negativity can build a non-reductive conceptualization of rationality, and thus offer a valuable contribution to the orientation of humankind in the 20th and 21st century. This volume contains contributions in English, French, and German.

The intellectual and worldwide authority of R. Bernet's work is well represented by the list of contributors, as well as by the content of their chapters. In a sense, this volume is a good indication of the importance of Bernet's own books, articles and classes. The editors have chosen to concentrate the contributions on what could be estimated to be one of the three major themes of his philosophical itinerary: life, seen from a phenomenological point of view, its relation to subjectivity, experiences and consciousness, and both seen as the ground for an original reflection on art (paintings).
