The cutlips minnow, Exoglossum maxillingua, is distinguished from other cyprinid fishes in North America by its unique trilobed lower jaw. It is common in many upland regions of the Atlantic Coast drainage of north-eastern North America, but in Canada it is rare in Ontario and more widespread in Quebec. This report provides information on the fish's geographic distribution, protection status, population sizes and trends, habitat, general biology, factors limiting its population and affecting its habitat, and the special significance of the species. Concludes with an evaluation of the future of the species in Canada.
