This is the story of Fa Hien, 5th century Buddhist pilgrim, who, in the year 399CE, set out walking from his home in Chang'an (Xi'an), China, toward his final destination near Pataliputra (Patna), India, via Purushapura (Peshawar), now in Pakistan. He made this trip to retrieve and translate original texts to clarify the practice of Buddhism in China, which was then almost a thousand years and five thousand miles from its source. Those are the facts. But this is a novel, and Fa Hien was not alone. There was also Jing Chang, his trusted porter and a well-traveled tribal boy with much knowledge and no shortage of ambition in his own right. He knew a shortcut, also. So, when master and student separate, Jing Chang sets off on his own adventures, he and his Greek partner with a growing opium problem. What could go wrong? But they'll all meet again.
Think of hostels, and you don't usually think of Asia, but here they are, and the number is growing. As you would expect, many of them are in the highly developed (and expensive) countries of Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore, but they're found everywhere, even China, especially China, and the customers are not all Westerners, either. Hostels are all about more than just cheap rooms. Southeast Asia is the last place you'd need a hostel for cheap lodging, but here they are in full force: Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and even Burma now. India has finally gotten on board, and Sri Lanka and Nepal, too. That's because a hostel is like having a bit of home with you. If one of the coolest th...
In his mid-fifties Hardie Karges suddenly finds himself at a crossroads in his life, career, and relationship, so decides to do (again) the one thing that he does better than anything else—travel. That means cashing in some frequent-flyer miles and heading to South America, specifically the four southernmost countries that he has yet to visit. 'Ah, that felt good.' So two months later, that crossroads is still there, but there is no obvious path, indeed more like a half-dozen of them, one for each continent. So he decides to finally put into action a plan he's had for some time, to go to every country in the world. The result some two years later is a hundred countries visited for a person...

Included in the book are chapters on how to travel, when to travel, why to travel and where to travel, in general and in Southern Europe, Spain and the Alps in particular. There are also introductions to all cities with hostels, with historical and geographical background information and personal vignettes from the author's experience. If you like hostels, then you're going to love Australia and New Zealand, for here is the greatest concentration of backpackers' hostels in the world, on both coasts and everywhere in between. These are some of the nicest people and the nicest landscapes in the world, too, something of a cross between America and Europe, and maybe the best of both, loads of spectacular nature and some of the most refined cities, ranging in latitudes and altitudes from tropical to Antarctic, from beaches and nightclubs to glaciers and fireplaces.
