The Mediterraneans

" This collection of articles supplements the previous issue on ""The Mediterraneans. Transborder Movements and Diasporas"" (vol. 9 (2000) no. 2). Both publications resonate with a shift in how Mediterranean cultures and societies are constructed in anthropological research and discourse today. Anthropology finds itself challenged by forms of social life and experience that are neither wholly traditional nor unambiguously modern, by social actors who in their own practices and attitudes are breaking down the divide between tradition and modernity. We are studying cultures that we can no longer mistake for those traditional communities whose invention anthropology was complicit with. In dealing with this challenge, a potentially transnational dialogue between anthropologists of various backgrounds has emerged - a dialogue that we especially hope to foster and support with this edition of AJEC. Cultural styles of knowledge transmission

Cultural styles of knowledge transmission

Anthropologist Dr Ad Borsboom, chair of Pacific Studies at Radboud University Nijmegen, devoted his academic career from 1972 onwards to the transmission of cultural knowledge. Borsboom handed the insights he acquired during many years of fieldwork among Australian Aborigines on to other academics, students and the general public. This collection of essays by his colleagues, specializing in cultures from across the globe, focuses on knowledge transmission. The contributions deal with local forms of education or pedagogics, the learning experiences of fieldwork and the nexus of status and education. Whereas some essays are reflexive, others are personal in nature. But all of the authors are fascinated by the divergent ways in which people handle ‘knowledge’. The volume provides readers with respectful representations of other cultures and their distinct epistemologies.

Europeans consitiute 12 and a half per cent of the world's population but consume 50 per cent of the recorded world production alcohol, and this consumption plays a significant role in the cultural, religious, and social identites of these countrise. The contributors show how different groups define the proper use of alcohol, how State policies may effect drinking behaviour, and highlight how beverages and comestibles must be seen in relation to each other. From this is it shown how importamt socio-cultural distinctions are made between and within communities, gender relations, ethnic groups, and socio-economic groups, and within religious ideologies; what one drinks, how one drinks, with whom, and where, all influence not how alcoholic substances are regarded but how social relations are experienced. Alcohol Gender and Culture clearly demonstrates how the social construction of drinking may provide an analytical tool with which to approach different socio-cultural groups and illustrates how any cultural group can be compared to another by its attutudes to alcohol. It will be invaluable reading for students and lecturers af anthropology, cultural history and gender studies.

Revitalizing European Rituals

First published in 1992, Revitalizing European Rituals explores why revitalization of celebrations is taking place in communities throughout Europe. The festive behaviour appears to contradict the sober, rational conduct associated with modernization and industrialization. The contributors examine fairs, carnivals, fiestas, Holy Week, and national rituals in Britain, Poland, Spain, Italy, Malta and Greece. They have lived and worked in the communities they describe, celebrated the festivities they analyse, and have discussed them with the celebrants. The underlying reasons for the revival are complex and examined fully. The conclusions provide surprising insights into the changes sweeping across Europe. This book will be valuable reading for researchers and lecturers in social anthropology, sociology, religious studies, cultural studies, and tourism.
