Complex Networks and their Applications

Fuelled by the big data paradigm, the study of networks is an interdisciplinary field that is growing at the interface of many branches of science including mathematics, physics, computer science, biology, economics and the social sciences. This book, written by experts from the Network Science community, covers a wide range of theoretical and practical advances in this highly active field, highlighting the strong interconnections between works in different disciplines. The eleven chapters take the reader through the essential concepts for the structural analysis of networks, and their applications to real-world scenarios. Being self-contained, the book is intended for researchers, graduate and advanced undergraduate students from different intellectual backgrounds. Each chapter combines mathematical rigour with rich references to the literature, while remaining accessible to a wide range of readers who wish to understand some of the key issues encountered in many aspects of networked everyday life.

ICIAR 2004, the International Conference on Image Analysis and Recognition, was the ?rst ICIAR conference, and was held in Porto, Portugal. ICIAR will be organized annually, and will alternate between Europe and North America. ICIAR 2005 will take place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The idea of o?ering these conferences came as a result of discussion between researchers in Portugal and Canada to encourage collaboration and exchange, mainly between these two countries, but also with the open participation of other countries, addressing recent advances in theory, methodology and applications. The response to the call for papers for ICIAR 2004 was very positive. From 316 full papers submitted, 2...

Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis

The two volume set LNCS 3686 and LNCS 3687 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third International Conference on Advances in Pattern Recognition, ICAPR 2005, held in Bath, UK in August 2005. The papers submitted to ICAPR 2005 were thoroughly reviewed by up to three referees per paper and less than 40% of the submitted papers were accepted. The first volume includes 73 contributions related to Pattern Recognition and Data Mining (which included papers from the tracks of pattern recognition methods, knowledge and learning, and data mining); topics addressed are pattern recognition, data mining, signal processing and OCR/ document analysis. The second volume contains 87 contributions related to Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis (which included papers from the applications track) and deals with security and surveillance, biometrics, image processing and medical imaging. It also contains papers from the Workshop on Pattern Recognition for Crime Prevention.

This book addresses social and complex network analysis challenges, exploring social network structures, dynamic networks, and hierarchical communities. Emphasizing network structure heterogeneity, including directionality and dynamics, it covers community structure concepts like distinctness, overlap, and hierarchy. The book aims to present challenges and innovative solutions in community structure detection, incorporating diversity into problem-solving. Furthermore, it explores the applications of identified community structures within network analysis, offering insights into social network dynamics. Investigates the practical applications and uses of community structures identified from n...

Complex Networks XIII

This book contains contributions presented at the 13th International Conference on Complex Networks (CompleNet), April 19–22, 2022. CompleNet is an international conference on complex networks that brings together researchers and practitioners from diverse disciplines—from sociology, biology, physics, and computer science—who share a passion to better understand the interdependencies within and across systems. CompleNet is a venue to discuss ideas and findings about all types of networks, from biological to technological and to informational and social. It is this interdisciplinary nature of complex networks that CompleNet aims to explore and celebrate.

Computer Analysis of Images and Patterns

This volume presents the proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Computer Analysis of Images and Patterns (CAIP 2005). This conference - ries started about 20 years ago in Berlin. Initially, the conference served as a forum for meetings between scientists from Western and Eastern-block co- tries. Nowadays, the conference attracts participants from all over the world. The conference gives equal weight to posters and oral presentations, and the selected presentation mode is based on the most appropriate communication medium. The program follows a single-track format, rather than parallel s- sions. Non-overlapping oral and poster sessions ensure that all attendees have the opportuni...

Can networks unlock secrets of AI or make sense of a social media mess? A behind-the-scenes look at how networks reveal reality. According to mathematician Anthony Bonato, the hidden world of networks permeates our lives in astounding ways. From Bitcoin transactions to neural connections, his book explains how networks shape everything from political landscapes to climate patterns and how deceptively simple dots and lines can unveil the wonders of technology, society, and even nature. From a fresh and startling look at the true impact of clever keywords in politicians' social media posts to a fun breakdown of survival strategies in reality TV shows, Bonato shows us how network theory operates everywhere. Each chapter focuses on a unique aspect of networks to reveal how they provide a captivating lens for bringing diverse phenomena into clearer focus. The book offers an accessible snapshot of networks for anyone curious about what makes the modern world tick. Bonato's insights will give readers a deeper appreciation and understanding of networks and their relevance to our everyday lives.
