Personal memories of the days of the Spanish Civil War, in Catalan and English
Lluis (1914-98), though sympathetic to the Nationalists, was forced by geography to join the Republican Army during the 1936-39 conflict. His niece Idoya (Spanish, Manchester Metropolitan U.) touches up his original Catalan and faces it with pages of English translation. History and Autobiography in Contemporary Spanish Women's Testimonial Writings
This monograph explores the biographical and autobiographical works of seven 20th-century Spanish women writers: Josefina Aldecoa, Mercedes Formica, Dolores Ibarruri, Pilar Jaraiz Franco, Federica Montseny, Constancia de la Mora, and Isabel Oyarzabal de Palencia. Literary and political figures, these women contest traditional versions of Spanish history through their published works, and offer different perspectives on the role of women within that history. They address the past from diverse ideological standpoints - communism, republicanism, socialism, anarchism and fascism. The text examines the construction of the identity of the female historical subject within a specific sociopolitical context, drawing on relevant critical work from the fields of historicism, feminism and cultural studies.
The Metamorphoses of Don Juan's Women
While many scholars have approached Don Juan in terms of myth, this study argues for the understanding of Don Juan as a discourse of gender relations, changing over time. Using examples from the plays by Tirso de Molina, Moliere, Mozart, Zorrila, Shaw and Frisch, it argues that Don Juan's entire identity as a male individual is constructed around women, but that over time - reflecting a growing sense of crisis in the male individual - the women appear more and more pathological in their desire for Don Juan. In contrast with early modern works where women fend for themselves in a positive manner, the heroines of later Don Juan works actively prey on the individual male.This book argues that these changes in approach to the female characters, and, in tandem, the developing identity of the male protagonist, suggest Don Juan as dischronic discourse rather than myth.
