The Pragmatics of Metadiscourse

This volume explores how metadiscourse shapes communication across cultures and time. Drawing on contemporary and historical evidence, the chapters show how writers and speakers organise discourse, construct identities, and negotiate persuasion in diverse intercultural settings. With analyses ranging from academic and medical writing to business and digital interaction, the book illustrates the subtle ways language bridges cultural differences and supports understanding in a globalised world, offering fresh empirical insights into the pragmatics of communication.

Queering Women's and Gender Studies

This volume brings together approaches to, and perspectives on, English, Spanish, and Galician language, literature, and culture from the fields of women’s, gender, and queer studies. As its title reflects, the book adopts an inclusive attitude to the so-called “others” present in these fields. Since queer theory first appeared in academia, its influence has been notorious within both women’s and genders. As such, it is vital to “queer” academia so that it re-conceptualises its foundations; indeed, the contributions here serve to alter the reader’s consciousness of the terms “woman” and “gender”. The first chapters concern the field of discourse analysis. Two discuss th...

Writing History in Late Modern English

This volume focuses on the relationship and interaction of language and science between 1700 and 1900. It pays particular attention to English History writing in late Modern English as compiled in the Corpus of History English Texts (CHET), a newly released sub-corpus of the Coruña Corpus of English Scientific Writing. The chapters cover methodological issues, the period and the status of the discipline itself, as well as pilot studies for the description of scientific discourse using CHET. They embrace topics in several linguistic fields: discourse analysis, syntax, semantics, morpho-syntax. The studies take into account extralinguistic parameters of texts, such as year of publication, sex...

Astronomy ‘playne and simple’

This volume includes methodological considerations and descriptions of some of the texts compiled in The Corpus of English Texts on Astronomy (CETA), together with a number of pilot studies using these texts showing how the corpus can be used to investigate English Astronomy writing between 1700 and 1900, from a synchronic and a diachronic perspective.CETA is part of the Coruña Corpus of English Scientific Writing (CC). Since the CC was designed in 2003 with a sampling method by which extracts of 10,000 words were selected, this method has been followed in CETA, with samples from 42 different authors both from Europe and North America. Some extralinguistic parameters, such as year of public...

This volume offers a collection of papers which seek to provide further insights into the way scientific and technical knowledge is communicated (i.e., written, transmitted, and translated) nowadays, not only in the academic sphere but also in society as a whole. Language in science has traditionally been valued for prioritising objective, propositional content; however, interpersonal and pragmatic dimensions as well as translation perspectives are worth exploring in order to better understand the mechanisms of specialised communication. Accordingly, the contributions in this volume cover topics of special interest to scholars and researchers in the fields of linguistics and translation, such as the popularisation and transmission of scientific knowledge via ICTs; terminology and corpus-based studies in scientific discourse; genres and discourse in scientific and technical communication; the history and evolution of scientific language; and translation of scientific texts.
